Almost too good for a superhero-movie.
1 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If "Batman Begins" was dark, then "The Dark Night" is pitch black. Large parts of the storyline is driven by deep personal tragedies for the main character's, with resulting evolution for most of them. This is apparent in Bale who is of the few left from last time. He has clearly grown more into the role of particularly Bruce Wayne. As far as the hype surrounding Heath Ledger goes, Ledger is great. Copying some of Nicholson's mimics from "Batman" and finding a great balance between the sheer madness and the calculated evil that makes The Joker. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent, however, is much, much better. He brings life and complexity to the politician and crusader Dent, and whilst Ledger makes good on a great role, Eckhart makes perfect of a lesser character. He steals many of the scenes he is in, whether pitted against Bale, Gyllenhaal or Ledger. Nolan has done himself a huge favour by letting the evolving of characters move the film forward, rather than the other way around. Nothing ever feels forced, unnecessary or boring, despite a run of 152 minutes. The are fragments and clues spread around in a large portion of the aptly written dialogue that make the audience pay perfect attention when the intensity of action is lowered. What Nolan does best though, is contrasting Dent and The Joker. Dent will draw away from choice and consequence by flipping his coin (a wonderful symbol after it actually has two different sides) and act accordingly, whereas The Joker will force the conscious choice. Both for Batman and the common man there are exruciatingly inhumane choices to make that make you cringe at the very thought of them.

Sorry....

But this is NOT a good movie. This may be because I am male, but I simply think the plot fails in the aspect of the 2 respective "lies". While Benjamin does his "crime" in the form of a somewhat less than private bet, Andy is about to publicly humiliate him. First of all, Benjamin's plot is less than original as everyone appears to have a friend who has made a bet on such a subject. Secondly, (and this is where my gender may get blended into it) his crime is PETTY compared to hers. So I simply fail to see her indignation when she learns the truth. And as her part of the plot is highly original, it brings a further lack of balance to the whole story. I did enjoy seeing "Lilith" back in peak condition, and the acting is plausible, but there are more embarrasing scenes than genuinely funny scenes, thus this is just another mediocre rom-com with a predictable ending and a few good laughs.

The only reason to make this movie, and the only reason it is not worthy of a 1 here. There are some cool explosions and car chases but apart from that, this is bloody awful. The story is so bad it almost does not exist, and apart from Pantoliano a horrid backup cast provide support. The humour and originality of the first is gone (as with MIB 2). So Please, PRETTY please: Let us NEVER have to see Martin Lawrence again. For all the reasons obvious!

BAD!

With all due respect for Mr. Leary's capabilities as a comedian, this movie illustrates quite vividly that he is not an actor Hollywood has too much respect for. This movie is really, really stupid, and even Leary himself has admitted to being embarrassed about it. Bullock is on autopilot and all other characters are blatantly uninteresting. Only worth 3 points due to Leary's fishing-scene, that allows him to do what he is best at, comedy, and a rare performance by Yaphet Kotto. If you have no idea who Leary or Kotto is and thought "since Bullock is in it, it must be OK", you would be TERRIBLY wrong!!!

100% absolutely and most surely...

CRAP! This movie is the most awful piece of garbage I have seen since "Vanilla Sky"! Let's start with the plot. 1 homicidal computer (done in earlier movies) a lot of Zombies (done BETTER and with humour in MANY other movies) and a dash of lost memory (please, don't get me started). Hence noone really knows who the bad guy/girl is or event if there is one - and quite frankly I didn't care! The characters are so unrealistic and the acting so sub-...well---sub-everything, I'm afraid that I really couldn't care less as to who survived and who died a zombie-death we I had seen done better so many times before... hm. I think I hate Zombies now, and it is all due to this film. Damn! Oh, and I almost forgot! They decided to put in a pile of annoying and unneccesary flash-backs to p*** me off just enough to rate this movie 1 instead of a 2. So there you have it! You enjoyed this movie? SHAME ON YOU! Go home and BEG forgiveness from your DVD-player for making it play this movie!

Alert!! Stay clear!

This movie does have a couple of interesting names attached to it, but nothing can help an awful script like this. Besides, the "erotic" scenes in the movie are so lame that it looks like the actor (Fahey) and actresses (Doody & Durham) would rather be home shaving their pet rat. Find another movie, or just sit around moping on your floor!
