Ein spätes Mädchen (2007)
Germany is the main character
This move is not a love story. It is a story about the German soul and its straitjackets at the start of the millennium. It is about Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, and Vienna, and what unites them and separates them. It is not a movie that travels well--it requires an understanding of German character.and offers no handy explanations. I'm sure there is a subtitled version available but it almost makes no sense to have such a thing. If you don't know the language, you probably don't know enough about the various personality types to appreciate what the film has to offer. I think this explains the wide range of ratings. Those expecting the movie to be about the characters and their relationships are disappointed. Those who see it as a piece about a particular place and time in Europe are rewarded.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
One of the best movies I've ever seen.
...and I won't even tell you why. Just go see it. It's much more profound than the "thriller" presented in the trailer. I've heard several other people comment that the movie surprised them by being much better than they expected. Enjoy!
Don Juan DeMarco (1994)
How to spark a romance...
If you want to set a romantic mood for an evening, rent this film. The true inspirational beauty here is not in the loves of the young Johnny Depp character, but in how he inspires the 60-something psychiatrist, played by Marlon Brando, to rediscover the flames that kindled his marriage.
Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000 (1976)
It's a great time to revisit this film.
I first saw this film when it was new. When I saw the title in a local video store, I couldn't resist the chance to see it again on the eve of Jonah's 25th birthday. Some of the political rhetoric is dated, but in some ways it's amazing how little has changed. The film is in some ways about taking stock of one's life. And seeing it twice, almost 25 years apart, certainly helped me to do that.
