Rubin and Ed (1991)
Wonderful....stupendous
I first saw this movie with friends 5 or six years ago, and to this day the images are as crystal clear as they were that first viewing (and I have watched this movie many, many times since). The premise is wacky, but if that's what you're looking for (unadulterated enjoyment) definitely check this baby out. As another member commented, the lines are quotable, we constantly interjected "My cat can eat a whole watermelon" and, "rub it in your hair and stick it up your butt" into everyday converstaion...every line is a winner!! Crispin Glover and Howard Hessman were perfect for this movie, they could not have cast it better! I highly, highly recommend this movie!!
Ed and His Dead Mother (1993)
While not a movie for everyone, give this one a shot!
I first saw this movie on late-night cable; and instantly fell in love with both this film, and the talent of Steve Buscemi. Viewing this movie is HIGHLY entertaining. Although, I have discovered, while watching with groups, that this movie is not for everyone. Some of my friends feel as though it is TOO unbelievable a storyline, making it hard to watch. I feel as though the unrealistic concept is WHAT makes this movie the gem that it is. I also feel as though the supporting cast is fantastic... Of course, it doesn't have the greatest acting in the world...and once again, that is part of its' cultish charm!
A Christmas Story (1983)
Beyond a doubt, THE classic Christmas tale!
This movie is just a fantastic piece of cinema. I first saw this movie in the theatre with my family...of the four of us, my father was the only one not rolling on the floor. Ralphie is one of the greatest characters ever scripted. He IS the movie, although the father and little brother both share some of the more humorous scenes (the furnace, lamp, and meatloaf scenes). This movie IS Christmas at our house...the tree doesn't go up until after the first viewing. A Christmas Story isn't watched in our house as much as it used to...ONLY because my brother and I have since aged and left the nest. Although, these past few years have been great, thanks to TNT's 24 hour--12 run marathon. Of which, I am around to watch with my mother, while my dad sounds awfully like the father character, grumbling, "How can ANYONE watch that movie more than once in a row?" Very easily, when it is one as highly entertaining as this one. Great story and great acting! You CAN'T help but smile when thinking about this movie!
