Battlefield Earth (2000)
Battle Bad Movies
I read three newspaper reviews (all negative), I warned my friends but yet, they went and so did I. This is a dark movie, I mean, this movie put me in a dark mood. I never thought there could another movie as bad as 'The Postman', but here it is.
This is a classic tale of someone in Hollywood pulling strings to get this movie made so they can make a certain actor happy (and possibly a certain group happy). I could give you the plot, the spoilers, the highlights but I am a merciful person and will not subject anyone to torture.
However, I will leave you with this. Don't make the same mistake I made. Smart spending will require you to spend your money on something else. And while we are at the subject of spending, heed my warnings when this movie goes to video. It is time we draw the line on the Battlefield ... draw the line against bad movies. Let us start by making this movie our first quick kill at the box office.
Act of War (1998)
The horrible act
Watched it on TV, started to wonder why others liked the explosions. Just a bad movie all around. They must have a lot of money in Hollywood to go ahead with this movie. I would like to read plots of movies that did not make the cut because they must be really horrible if this movie got made.
'The Postman' was a great action flick next to this.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Fun,fun,fun
Maybe it does not have the Speilberg genius that 'Jaws' had but I think DBS was made as a fun and an action packed movie which is exactly what it delivered. The ocean setting was great and so was the lab.
Saffron Burrows looked really attractive but you won't feel like rooting for her as the movie made her responsible for the chaos. The sharks were the real stars of the movie and to enjoy the movie, I would ask you not to pay too much detail on the realism of the sharks.
Keep it simple and keep it fun and you'll enjoy the movie. The ending by the way is unusually different from the Hollywood norms.
Stigmata (1999)
Poses an interesting question
Don't go in thinking it's the next 'Exorcist' because it's more like a religious mystery movie.
Patricia Arquette delivered a good performance (actually felt sorry for her character) and Gabriel Byrne was equally good. The movie moved at a good pace and don't be surprised if you find yourself on the web trying to learn a little more about the content of the mystery.
The movie definitely took some risks with a particular religious institution and we'll know soon enough if it causes an uproar. Overall, it wasn't a horror but a good movie that poses an interesting question.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Great movie
So far, this is the best movie of 1999. The plot itself was worth the time and sub-consciously (or maybe in purpose), the movie tempts you to watch it again.
I have been waiting for a good horror movie and the last was maybe 'Evil Dead' even though the stories are very different. Both made me jump off my seat.
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Something's missing
Braveheart had to be the last good movie when it came to sword fighting and medieval setting. 13th Warrior does not come close. The movie moves too slowly and in the end you're trying to come up with something nice to say so it doesn't feel like you wasted $8.
I did! And Antonio really looked uncomfortable doing the movie ... don't think that was part of the script.
