Amores perros (2000)
Perros Amores
Certainly a movie different from the norm. With a duration of two hours and a half, three separate but intertwined stories take place on the big screen. Incredible photography and great directing makes this movie a huge leap forward for the mexican film industry.
Two elements are constantly played onscreen. How hard relationships can be, the trials and sufferings we all go through, be it between lovers, a father and his daughter or two brothers. And in a lesser degree, dogs. Every character has something to do with mans best friends.
Like I mentioned before three main stories are presented, but intertwined in such a manner as to indicate that our actions touch people in what may seem accidental but can affect them in profound ways.
What else can I say but congratulate the director and everybody involved in the film for having the strength to make a film such as this. Go see this movie.
Bajo California: El límite del tiempo (1998)
Wim Wenders mexicano
An unusual movie coming from a mexican director. The story of a man who sets out to find himself among the deserts of Baja California. He travels from Los Angeles to San Francisco de la Sierra, travels across the landscape and finally arrives at his destination, the primitive paintings of the californian indians.
Resembles Wim Wenders "Paris, Texas" in that our protagonist is looking for something that he can´t find, something that he needs in order to feel complete. The movie´s length lets us share his journey. The landscape is beautiful and desolate, as anyone familiar with Baja California will recognize. An excellent achievement by a mexican director. Not a movie for everybody, but one that stays with you after you´ve seen it. The phrase "...el pasado son todos nuestros muertos" is very powerful; I definitely recommend this movie.
Todo el poder (2000)
A true portrait of life in the city
What "Todo el Poder" has going for it is that it accurately depicts what living in Mexico City is like. Constant threats of being mugged, kidnapped and worse. This is in no way helped by a corrupt police force which is accurately depicted in the film. If I had to have one complaint, it would probably be that at times the movie is tedious and slow. Besides the fact that we see Demian Bichir yet again in a starring role. Come on, there are other actors out there.
