Un roi sans divertissement (1963)
No...
I was unfortunate to see this after I read the actual book, and it was a huge disappointment.. The story is different, the plot overly simplistic, most of the characters have lost their depth and complexity and charm. In some cases they have literally been changed. The entire message is spelled out all too clearly.
The weird thing is that the author Jean Giono actually wrote the script. I really don't understand what made him destroy his own book like this. Because it's a decent enough book, with some good points and and interesting story.
No. I didn't like it at all.
From Hell (2001)
With Johnny Depp it can't be bad, but..
Basically any film with Johnny Depp in it will be pretty good, due to the fact that he is an incredible actor, and so is Ian Holm who holds another big part. I did actually like this film very much - the period is interesting and well depicted and the story is gripping. The whole theory exposed here about the identity of Jack the ripper is fascinating and all. But I can't help asking myself what on earth Heather Graham was doing in this film? She didn't sound very Irish to me, and she just isn't an actress of the right caliber. She completely disappeared behind Johnny Depp.
Well, except for that, I think the film deserves 8,5/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
not entirely true to the book - but the result is exciting
I decided not to have my expectations too high - it couldn't be as good as it was in my head. it wasn't either, but if you have an open mind you won't be disappointed. I understand why they cut out tom bombadil - you're trying to build a tension and a story and suddenly you have this weird man going around in yellow boots and singing... Why they put arwen in here isn't so easy to understand, but maybe they didn't want to mix in glorfindel - even another character to keep track of. what I really missed was lothlórien - they should have shown more of it and emphasized on the gifts. the rope sam was given will be very important later - and they didn't mention it at all. boromir gave away his intentions right away - I didn't remember it like that. I think the casting was great. saruman was perfect. legolas was absolutely beautiful - I've always loved elves. and he was impressing in battle! Frodo seemed a bit helpless, standing there with his big blue eyes. but he was supposed to be like that. the black riders were terrifying, and the orcs were extremely ugly.
even though the film was 3 hours long it didn't feel like it.
it was exciting and beautiful. I'd really like to see it again, and I can't wait until number two comes!
Bleeders (1997)
bad. veeeeery bad.
I saw this movie with a lot of friends yesterday. before we turned it on, one of them said that "rutger hauer never does bad movies". he was wrong. the whole subject of inbreeding is repulsive, the mutants are yucky and ugly and there's hardly a story. when you watch a movie like this with many others, it's not the least scary either, so we just talked a lot about how bad it was. then at least it had some entertainment value... the ending was surprising, but very grotesque. the way the movie just opened for a sequel really annoyed me. just stay away from it. believe me.
The Meaning of Life (1983)
Brilliant. I couldn't stop laughing!
i love Monty Python. I have seen a lot of their shows and movies, and of the movies this is by far the funniest. They have so many incredible ideas, I wonder where they come up with all of it. My favorites is the sperm song ("Every sperm is sacred....", That's hilarious), the birth "this is the machine that goes BING!) nad the grim reaper who comes to dinner. Such great humor. Timeless, really. This movie is highly recommended.
Conte d'été (1996)
feel-good, summery great movie
I really loved this movie. many of the french films I have seen have been dark and depressing, but this was a really funny, pleasant little movie.
the "geek"-like main character is in britanny for the summer. he meets two girls, and then he meets up with his girlfriend. he juggles and sees them all for a while, until he has to choose, and bail on them all. there is sun throughout most of the movie, and you can really feel the "summer". being in norway in january, I need that... anyway, the story is cute and well told. the actors are charming and believeble. there's not much excitement, but it's not that kind of a movie.
well, it's highly recommended if you want to see a charming funny film and don't mind reading subtitles. I'm trying to learn french myself, and listening to it helps a lot. (it really made me want to go to britanny.)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
I don't think I understood this.
I have to be honest and say that I probably didn't understand the full meaning of this film. the symbolical value of, well, most things except for the monolith, must have passed me. I must admit, it is a beautifully made film. the scenes from outer space are breathtaking. And the music is wonderful. I think hal is an amusing character, but at the same time scary. what if we have computers one day that think all by themselves... then there's no need for us! I think mr Kubrick was a bit too cryptic for my liking. the ending just left me confused. what really happened here? what did this mean? I still don't know. but it was beautiful...
Snatch (2000)
great fun!!!!
As i haven't seen "Lock, stock...", I can't complain that the two are all the same. I can just say that i loved this movie! Brad Pitt was absolutely hilarious, the accent is the funniest I've heard in a long time. It was rather violent, but it was done in a very elegant way. such a confusing plot, you have to concentrate a bit, but it is very funny indeed. highly recommended, also for girls :)
Dawson's Creek (1998)
i like it a lot
I like dawson's creek a lot. And it's not because I can relate to all the situations or anything, because, I mean, how many people have affairs with their teachers???
I know the characters speak like they're professors, but that's one of the things that I like. I consider myself to be a relatively intelligent person, and I find that so many teen series have dialogues that are so fluffy ans stupid. if you know what I mean. meaningless crap, like they talk to little kids. And Dawson's creek characters actually talk like the smart young people that they are. ok, sometimes it's a bit too complicated, but anyway.
I too love Pacey and Joey. Josh Jackson and Katie Holmes are so talented, and they play their characters brilliantly. I'm not that fond of Jen, she's the kind of person I'd hate in real life. Despite being really annoying at some times, Dawson is kind of cute. I think it's great that the characters aren't stereotypes, they have special personalities. Even though Dawson's creek was best in the first season, I'll keep watching.
I have to find out what happens!! It's really addictive I suppose.
Mansfield Park (1999)
Another great Austen adaption.
I saw this movie yesterday, and I found it very charming. I'm a great fan of Jane Austen, but I haven't read this book yet. I have, however, read most of her other books, and the movie was very "Austen-like". Although her stories are quite predictable, they are usually very enjoyable. I do like the happy endings =) Frances O'Connor was a delightful Fanny Price, Embeth Davidtz was a brilliant, mean b*tch as Mary Crawford. There's one of those in every Austen book, and they are always very interesting characters.
As always, the setting was beautiful, and the filming showed us the lovely landscape the surrounded the castle. I liked this movie very much. Jane Austen is funny, intelligent and witty. I recommend it. (9/10)
La vie rêvée des anges (1998)
This was a rather shocking experience
In my home country Norway this film was rated 11 years, meaning 11 year-old kids and possibly 8-year-olds can see this movie in the company of their parents. If you ask me, that is insane. This is a simple, serious and depressing movie, definitely not suited for 11-year-olds.
The way Marie is abused by her new boyfriend is horrible to watch. And what happens in the end is tragic. It made me so sad, I just wanted to cry. I walked out of the theatre feeling quite empty. This movie was emotionally hard on me. It has its light sides though - Isa (Elodie Bouchez) is wonderful. So exuberant. Happy. I want to get to know her, or be her. Sadly, her happiness is pushed aside by all the sad stuff. But she stand up again in the end, and she doesn't let it break her.
I gave this movie a 9 vote, even though I thought it was awful to watch the abuse, because it made me think. It did something to me. And you don't get that so much from the movies they spit our from Hollywood. It is awfully realistic.
Shadow Builder (1998)
Bad. Really bad.
I just have to say that this movie SUCKS!!!!!! The storyline is stupid. The effects are bad. Bad. The 'scary' shadow looks like the spray paint you can use on the simple computer drawing program Microsoft Paint. Wow.... I don't particularly like scary movies, that's true. I was kind of nervous about seeing this, but it wasn't creepy at all!! I simply didn't believe in it for one second. Yes, the story is meant to be surreal, but it needs a certain credibility anyway! The only creepy part was actually 'hero' or whatever Vassey. Not the shadow builder or crazy man or anything.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Surprisingly good
I just have to say that this movie is surprisingly good.
Most "teen flicks" aren't but this is. Although it's based on Shakespeare's "The taming of the shrew", it's very loosely based...
The story has all the stereotypes (feminist, "shallow" blonde girl, shallow handsome guy...) but it doesn't really matter. It's fun and somewhat intelligent(just a little bit)with a cute love story.
Recommended.
Wild Things (1998)
Twists and turns
In the beginning this movie seems obvious, like something we've all seen too many times. But as it moves along nothing is like you think it is. Who's really the bad guy/girl? When you think you have it all sorted out, then BAM! something happens and you have to start wondering all over again. That can be good, but here it's all too much for my liking. It's almost exhausting with all those twists and turns. It makes you think and wonder, but it's almost a little depressing when you find out that you really haven't got a clue. The movie isn't bad, though. The actors all do good jobs. I especially liked the lawyer. If you manage to keep up with the action, you might enjoy this movie. I gave it 6/10
Shooting Fish (1997)
Brilliant
This movie is practically my all time favorite. At least favorite comedy. It is absolutely brilliant, with lovely actors hilarious script, everything really.
Jez (Stuart Townsend) is very cute and just incredible. Georgie (Kate Beckinsale) is almost like I would have wanted to be if I could choose.
I love this movie so much, and I laughed just as much when I'd seen it three times as after the first.
Un tè con Mussolini (1999)
Well.... OK, but that's as far as it goes.
At first I didn't like this movie at all, but it got better as it moved along. Little Luca was very cute and his father was rather funny, just as I imagine an italian guy. All these old british ladies were in my opinion very annoying, especially Maggie Smith as Lady Hester. ("My late husband, the ambassador..." was a phrase used a little too much) Cher was a little misplaced in 30's Italy, but she did a decent figure. I don't think I am in the target group of this film, cause the most interesting feature was Luca as a teenager. He was very handsome.... ;)
