Super Size Me (2004)
Thought-provoking and funny
What I liked about this movie is that it made its points without being overly preachy. With that said, the points this movie makes are incredibly important. America is in the midst of an obesity epidemic, and films liks this are critical to opening people's eyes. It is truly disturbing that our kids health is being auctioned off to the lowest bidder, and that food companies manipuate our kids through slick and highly polished marketing. This film makes those points, and will have you laughing at the same time.
And it is also a sign of the times; 20 years ago nobody would have thought it was that crazy to eat nothing but McD's for 30 days; now it seems like an act of lunacy.
The Sting (1973)
A great classic that is still fresh today
This superb film brings an era to life in stylized, musical fashion. With great performances from an ensemble cast, a clever plot, evocative sets and not to mention a wonderful soundtrack, this picture definitely deserved its Best Picture award. It's not like today's rock-em-sock-em style movie - you need to sit back and let the picture work its spell.
I saw another negative review on this board, which puzzles me - how could someone not love this classic movie? It's worth a rent, and most people will count themselves as fans. Newman and Redford at their peaks, with a fun performance tossed in by Robert Shaw. Don't miss it!
The Last Castle (2001)
Not as bad as everyone said
My friend told me this movie "sucked", so I watched the DVD with low expectations, but it really wasn't that bad. I think Redford gave an excellent and convincing performance as the wayward General, and Gandolfini managed to hide enough of Tony Soprano to be watchable. Great supporting cast and action sequences. I give it a thumbs up.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
A movie that should have never been made
Imagine Ace Ventura in green fur and you pretty much have The Grinch. Ron Howard and the marketing behind this movie obviously is angling for "holiday classic" status. Some people might like the smart-alecy Grinch, but I thought Dr. Suess would turn over in his grave at how his character has been depicted. I found Carrey's interpretation annoying, like a talking green dog with ADD. If you want Grinch-ness, go for Chuck Jones wonderful animated classic, not this dreck.
Duets (2000)
this movie blew
Boring, terrible music, obnoxious characters with a "who cares?" plotline. I saw this on a plane (twice) and could have lived without it. Paul Giamatti is an appealing actor, but his character was so unappealing that I was hoping it would get bumped off. Why his counterpart cared about him so much is beyond me. Avoid!
Hannibal (2001)
Expensive Trash
It's obvious a lot of money was spent on this movie, but it's still trash. It takes great pains to be truly disgusting, and pulls that off quite well. At least it avoided the ridiculously bad ending in the book (was Thomas Harris a hack who got lucky w/ SOTL, or a good writer who turned into a hack?), but the ending they put in place wasn't much better. Unless you're into gross-out thrills, avoid this pig.
The General's Daughter (1999)
What a sorry piece of trash
Bad acting (especially on Travolta's part - his only emotions were teary-eyed and p***ed off), bad story, terrible script, uneven, heavy-handed direction and chopping editing. I heard it wasn't great, but it didn't even meet my low expectations. Yech!
