The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Much Better Than Expected
When the third Mummy film was announced, I can't say I was really looking forward to it. After I saw the trailer, I had a second thought about the film - it looked like it might be better than I expected. Yeah, I still knew I'd miss Rachel, but I wasn't going to let that ruin the movie for me if it was enjoyable.
So I went to see it opening day and enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, but it was a fun summer popcorn flick. It had some great scenery, nice locations, great costumes, pretty good special effects, lots of crazy action, and some nice eye candy for everyone. Some of the mummy humor was a bit much, but it was to be expected. Though Egypt was the perfect setting for the first two films, the relocation to China and telling a bit of a different story worked out fine. Every culture has its tales about death and resurrection, so a film series like this can spread itself out if it wants.
All in all it was a fun movie. My suggestion, just sit back and try to enjoy it. You just might. And remember that it is okay to enjoy both The Dark Knight AND The Mummy 3. Don't think it makes you "disloyal", because it sure as heck doesn't.
The Adventures of Sinbad (1996)
Two Good Seasons
"The Adventures of Sinbad" was a short lived, but entertaining action and adventure show from an era of television that appears to have been lost to the world here in 2007. It was like "Hercules" and "Xena" in some ways, no matter how light or dark it was. But it also had its own charm and was its own show. It ran for two seasons. The first was lighter. The second took a slightly darker turn, as did the show's title character, but he wasn't arrogant, self-centered, or evil like some people claim. He had seen a less than perfect world and lost a friend(s). Had the show had a third season, things would have balanced themselves out. Give both seasons a chance. They are both special and have their share of good and bad episodes. Even heroes have issues to work out, which is part of what makes them and their stories legendary and human.
Tales from the Neverending Story (2001)
Victoria Sanchez
Despite the awful writing and storylines, the show is worth a look for the very attractive Victoria Sanchez, who wonderfully portrays the evil Xayide. Despite being given awful lines many times, Sanchez looks very alluring in the villianess-like outfits her character wears, and gives her best. Even young Bastian Bux admits Xayide is "hot" in an episode when explaining her character to someone else. Also, though the storylines and writing are awful, the special effects are actually quite good.
Conan (1997)
What was so bad about this show?
After watching episodes on tape, thanks to a friend who had taped them, I want to know why Conan fans found this tv series so lame? Now, granted it wasn't the novels, or as bloodly and dark as it should have been...but it had monsters, women, warriors, killing, wizards, and Rolf did a great job as Conan the Cimmerian. Plus, unlike many syndie shows, had an actual storyline going through the season. Episodes like "Lair of the Beastmen" and "Al Sohn-Bar" were nicely done fantasy stories, with a bit of everything. Some episodes were not as worthy, but it was a fun series. Face it: Conan on cable or free TV isn't going to be the Conan a hardcore Conan fan wants. Until HBO can aquire a chance to produce a Conan tv series, the 1997/1998 "Conan: Adventurer" tv series is the best you'll get. And unless Threshold produces a new tv series (which they have yet to do, after fighting hard to get the rights, etc) the Keller Conan series is all there will be.
