Flash Gordon (1980)

If you think its bad you're missing the point

I loved this movie when i was about seven, and I enjoy it even more on the same childish level today. This is a movie that doesnt ask you to suspend belief or insult your intelligence, because it is so blatantly make believe right up front. I truly believe that the makers of this movie set out to make an over the top hammy piece of cinema. I dont think anyone can argue that, in that respect, they succeeded. I admit that Sam J. Jones is a terrible actor (even dubbed) but it lends it self nicely to the fact that flash just isnt that bright. And whether intentional or not, the bad acting in this film just helps it pull off the cheesiness to perfection. No movie with lines such as "I love you! But we only have fourteen hours left to save the earth!" could be considered a serious dramatic entity. Frankly I find the approach that this movie takes to be refreshing, especialy when compared with some ridiculously plotted movies, that while good in their own right, insult our inteligence by taking themselves seriously (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc). My advise to anyone watching this movie is to not expect Gone With the Wind or Casablanca. Just have fun! And dont hold the absurdity and cheesiness of this movie against it, because its intentional, and done beautifuly!

By far the worst movie i ever saw

I guess they reward idiocy today because whoever came up with the concept for this movie was not shot on sight.

This is a morons delight. The worst stereo-types of every ghetto and high school movie is dragged out twisted around and made even more unbearable. Every character in this movie has a sob story beyond sympathy. Lets pray for a remake where the whole school gets nuked.

***Spoiler*** how does a school so run down have the internet in the first place?

Notorious (1946)
a love story from Hitchcock? ***spoilers***

Just like all the post-war Hitchcock movies I've seen, the dialogue would be pretty good, Cary Grant makes it excellent, outstanding, terrific, choose your adjective. This is probably his darkest role in a Hitchcock film, and I think he plays the part very well.

As a self affirmed typical college age male, I hate corny love stories with sappy endings...having said that, I would have been genuinely upset had Devlin and Alicia not been together at the end of the movie. I watched the final scene in Alicias bedroom, and I can't remember EVER rooting as hard as I was for him to save her. I dont care who says what, she lives!

Stagecoach (1966)
its a wash

I agree with other posters who say that this is nowhere near the original. I also agree with the poster who said that John Wayne would have made a perfect movie.

When watching this movie I couldnt help but picture the actors from the original. However, I think both Slim Pickens and Van Hefflin are at least equal to their predessors. I also felt that Bing Crosby was outstanding, even though I thought the original actor (his name escapes me) was terriffic. I missed John Carradine very much. His replacement doesnt even come close.

The main difference in this movie is that it is carried more evenly by the cast. In the original, John Wayne was a superstar and his prescence took over the film.

This movie is kind of like the Chicago Bulls without Michael Jordan, and Alex Cord is Scottie Pippen. They were a good team, but they never won without Michael

Not Perfect, but close to the top

This movie has a few minor flaws that keep it from being what i consider a classic. The first time i saw this movie, i missed the opening scene where sean penn meets with his contact before going undercover, so i didnt know noonan was a cop until he confessed it. For me this made the movie much more interesting. I think something is lost by knowing the characters secret from the beginning.

I also liked the irish-italian mafia subplot, but did not like the fact that it was the driving force behind all the key events in the film. In my opinion it would have been better left in the background. However, I admit I cant think of a better vehicle for the story. Maybe I would have liked it better if Terry wasnt a cop at all, but then it would have been a whole different movie.

State of Grace as it is is a very good movie. I found the nighttime and early morning scenes when terry is first back in the kitchen absolutely intoxicationg. The Rooftop scene with Oldman, and Terry seeing Kathleen for the first time really communicated the feeling of Terry being home after a long time, and truly being HOME.

Sean Penn and Robin Wright did a great job of portraying characters torn apart inside by conflicting feelings and loyalties. In contrast Gary Oldmans character is also torn up in side, but he has no conflict, he is happy going right over the edge.

Worth seeing for any gangster film fan if for no other reason than because it is one of the few that deals with the Irish Mob. Also worth watching at least once for anyone who has experienced conflicted loyalties or rediscovered a lost love.

Most Pro-Bad Guy Movie I've Ever Seen

Most of the "anti-hero" movies show cops doing immoral things to take out the bad guys who are even worse. This movie flips the formula around. The cops (especially Wesley Snipes who says little besides "I'm gonna kill you") are evil characters with no redeemable qualities. Only David Caruso's character so much as justifies killing a criminal. The only person who does anything 'good' in the entire move is Walken, the villain.

King of New York is a very good gangster film. After watching this on TV i thought it was full of holes. However, after buying the video i realized that the TV version edited out many scenes that contained drug use and nudity. Pretty standard rise and fall plot, but when taken individually, has some of the best gangster scenes on film.

This was a typical late 80's early 90's flick..

This was a typical late 80's early 90's action flick....but its memorable for the title alone...just like all of these action movies THE PLOT IS EXTRA! the dialogue is head and shoulders above anything Stalone or Segal ever said...and the bickering between Johnson and Rourke is genuinely funny.... Above Average Action; Very Good Dialogue (for an action movie)
