The Search for Santa Paws (2010)
Very scary.
This is a dark, dark movie. It is certainly not a feel-good holiday movie.
It starts with Santa getting a letter about a friend passing away.
From there it's constant peril:
* Santa gets hit by a car and robbed in the street.
* There's a crooked foster mother who locks children in the basement and burns their toys in a garbage incinerator.
* One of the little girls actually gets into the incinerator to save the dog (who is now a stuffed dog) from being incinerated.
* Santa ends up in the hospital near death, and his elf's efforts to save him seem to be a failure.
My 7 year old daughter looked at me in the middle of it and said, "this is really scary."
Granted in the end there's a happy ending, but it really doesn't offset the peril that the viewer has to endure.
I do not recommend it.
Darkness Falls (2003)
Yeck...
I managed to see a free screening of Darkness Fall. It was well worth the price of admission.
The plot was interesting enough, but painfully unoriginal as it basically mimics most of the Nightmare on Elm St. plot. A social outcast is horribly burned, and then lynched by the town (that's the twist on the NOES plot), she curses the town right before they hang her and she comes back from the grave to exact her vengence.
The only believable character was the little brother of Emma Caulfield's character, played by Lee Cormie. For his age he did a better job of displaying the terror he felt than anyone else.
IMHO, the film had a solid basic story, but the execution was not nearly as dark as it could have been. There was a subtle Gothic undertone that was never taken advantage of, and for a town who's children have been at risk for paranormal murders for the past 100 some years. They sure were a cheery lot. If you ask me nightly child murders for that long tend to darken the mood of a town.
Anyhow, there were a few bright points in the film: The sound design for the Tooth Fairy was great. The openning scenes of the movie was very well done, and the scene with young Kyle cowering in terror in the bathtub was beautifully shot.
Apart from those few bright moments, this movie failed on so many levels.
Hey if you score free tickets or a $0.50 show go for it, but other than that don't waste your money.
Clerks (1994)
Kevin Smith Rocks
What can I say Kevin Smith is a comic genius. The pace of Clerks and the banter between the actors is so natural that you feel as if you're actually listening on someone's life. Jay and Silent Bob are absolutely hilarious.
The social commentary within the film is also done very well. I recommend this movie to everyone, but be warned the dialogue is not for the prudish. I've heard Kevin Smith be very critical of his films, but come on Mr. Smith, this movie just seems like it flowed so naturally onto the screen that it's almost sickening.
Great film!
Toy Story 2 (1999)
Toy Story 2 Rocks.
Wow. When Toy Story came out I was totally blown away, in fact I made it a goal to get into the CG Industry.
I went a saw TS2, and I must say that the advances are amazing. The dog in the movie is probably the most impressive feature.
All the CG aside, the story was great, the characters had real personality, and the spoofs about other movies were great.
I highly recommend this movie, and I can't wait to see what Pixar does next.
