Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
A Truly Enthralling Experience
Ever since I heard of Rebel Moon, I was impatiently waiting for its release. I knew I will not be disappointed, because of Snyder's name.
There's so much more to movie making than meets the eye. It takes a lot more than just high-budget visual effects to create a masterpiece. The acting, script, plot, direction, cinematography, all work in cohesion. But the most important thing is the art of blending all these elements together in such a way that the viewer gets absolutely immersed in the experience - enjoying every minute of it. I believe very few movie makers have mastered this art - and Zack Snyder is undoubtedly one of them.
Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former warrior, wary of violence, had decided to call it quits and live a peaceful life in a small village on a moon of a distant planet. But then, something happens, and she is compelled to fight again - you know - 'don't mess with me - you don't know who I am' kind of thing. We have seen these characters before, but we never get tired of seeing them again - provided all the essential elements of movie making are handled properly, which, in this movie, have been combined exceptionally well - leaving no dull moments at all.
I really feel Rebel Moon should have been released in theaters, before becoming available for streaming on Netflix. The reason is that movies like Rebel Moon have lots of cinematic elements - which means that they can be best enjoyed on a big screen with an immersive sound system. Most people watch Netflix on their home TVs, tablets and even smartphones which essentially strips away those theatrical components that make the movie a truly unforgettable visual experience. I am seeing several negative comments and reviews and I feel this might be the main reason.
As a Netflix subscriber, I'm so delighted that the streaming service is coming up with such cinematic marvels which are a treat to watch on your home cinema. Can't wait for part 2 in April 2024.
Rogue One (2016)
The Odd One
Although I would rate this episode very high in terms of visual effects, cinematography and production value, however, it was difficult for me to place the story on the time-line of the Star Wars series. As we were given to understand that it's a prequel to 2015 release "The Force Awakens" – I was expecting something like the background of characters like Rey – or a story that would extend into the near past of episode VII. However, the plot is completely disconnected with the latest episode and there is an entirely new set of characters whose relation with the existing set of characters, as we know in the Star Wars saga, is at best unclear and vague.
If you are a fan of science fiction movies and love to watch fancy space ships, humanoids, droids, friendly alien species, interplanetary warfare, then you must watch this movie.
However, as a Star Wars fan, you will find absolutely nothing that would qualify as any meaningful addition to the original tale. Nor there is anything you could expect to see in any subsequent episodes.
After enchanting us with The Force Awakens, Disney has given us Rogue One as a filler, perhaps with a message: "Hey, we're working very hard on the real one – The Last Jedi – till then, here's a Star Wars story you might like"
The Omen (2006)
Why compare an excellent film with one made thirty years ago?
I don't understand why people compare this movie with the 1976 version. The present one is an excellent film and there is no reason why we should compare it with a movie that was made thirty years ago. Brilliant photography, visual effects, sound, coupled with first rate performance by all actors make The Omen (2006) a treat to watch.
Before watching this movie, I read a number of reviews lamenting the present version for its supposedly weak overall filmography. I am really surprised. There isn't a dull moment throughout and the production is simply flawless.
I am a horror/mystery fan and have watched a large number of movies including The Omen (1976) and I would highly recommend The Omen (2006) to those looking for suspense/mystery/horror.
My vote: 8 out of 10
