Doragon heddo (2003)
Lost in translation... ^_^
Well, if you're expecting a Hollywood blockbusting action style flick, you'll be sorely disappointed. It is based on a Japanese manga, but it's not one of the kill everything type of mangas. The vast majority of people are already dead.
The film loses something in its translation to English. It is based on a bleak view of how an apocalypse would affect Japan, or more particularly Tokyo. All I can say is that the characters reactions, psyches and the types of characters involved are typically Japanese in style. The extremities of some characters reactions seems unbelievable, but they are common extreme reactions found in Japanese mangas and other Japanese productions.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
A Quick Review
Basically this is a kids film, from the way it's acted, to the subjects, to the colour schemes! It has it's funny moments, but it can't be taken as a serious movie. So don't judge it too harshly and don't expect a blockbuster. If you're going to see it, go with your kids and ask them what they thought, then write a review and rate it.
Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Please help this poor film find a trash can
This film was truly awful when it was released and this has been thrown into even greater perspective by the superb Lord of The Rings films. Marlon Wayans comedy simply doesn't fit into the film, the script is overly corny and just plain and simply bad, and the ending is...i don't know what to say about it. I guess if I can't say something good about it I shouldn't say anything at all! -=zip=-
Spies Like Us (1985)
An all time classic
I remember growing up watching Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, John Candy, Harold Ramis, etc. Still to this day they, in their various movies and combinations, provided some of the best comedic moments the cinema has seen. Spies Like Us unites Aykroyd and Chase in one of my all time favourite films. They work together (and against each other at times) so well and so naturally. Put this film alongside The Great Outdoors, Ghostbusters, Stripes, Armed and Dangerous, Dragnet, Trading Places, etc and you've got a great day of early to mid-80's comedy.
Resident Evil (2002)
At last an excellent movie has been made from a computer game
I was dearly hoping not to be disappointed, by a movie I had been waiting for since playing the original resident evil on my Playstation alone in my bedroom, back in 1996. I was hooked on the game and it's sequels, but of late have been made to jump less by Resident Evil games and I guess playing games less generally.
With the track record of game to film conversions I was a little dubious that the quality of the film would match the gameplay. I was disappointed with the conversion of another of my all time favourites conversions, namely Final Fantasy. It wasn't a total disappointment, but for a series of games I became totally hooked on, just didn't live up to my expectations. As for Tomb Raider, well I kind of got bored after the first game, but equally I think I would kind of get bored after that first movie aswell.
All in all I wasn't sure what to expect of Resident Evil the movie, but I did have high expectations. All in all I was shocked to find an excellent movie in its own standing, and have been hoping that the fact it's a game conversion doesn't drag it down too heavily at the box office.
I think I have to rate this movie in my top 10 of all time, and no I'm not going to pretend that my experience of the games doesn't influence that ranking, because it does. However, when you like something that much, all too often than not, you're disappointed. What I'm trying to say here is that if someone who liked the games as much as I did can think this film is excellent, then someone without such high expectations must like it.
I'm not about to go into details about the film. I'll let you all watch it and enjoy it without any major spoilers. The only criticism that I can level at this film is that it's too short and a few more bits could have been added into the mixture of the film that were in the game, such as more of the guns, other creatures and of course the infamous "Barry Burton." Well I guess they have to save some things until the 2nd movie (and I mean the guns, not Barry!) of what must prove to be at the least a trilogy.
Watch it and decide for yourself.
