Possibly the best 90 mins of TV I've ever seen
6 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched the two parts of this episode again for the latest of countless viewings. After the cliffhanger ending of season one, they return to the scene. The highlight of the opening sequence is the reaction of Toby to finding Josh, who has just been shot. The episode makes brilliant use of flashbacks to show how the team came together from its earliest beginnings. The speech that Bartlett gives explaining his decision to "hose" the dairy farmers is possibly my favourite scene of a show that is filled with brilliant scenes. There is not a word spoken of the bond between Donna and Josh, but it is explored brilliantly by the background scene, and is shown brilliantly just through Donna's expressions. Overall, these two episodes stand out as the crown jewel of what is, in my opinion, the best dramatic show I have ever watched.

Great Chemistry
11 March 2011
OK. So, I'm a guy. Who loves sports and beer. But I also appreciate a well done romantic comedy. The good: Four Weddings and A Funeral, Love Actually, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. The bad: almost anything else I've seen Ashton Kutcher do (Just Married, What Happens in Vegas, No Strings Attached). However, this movie was great for me. I think there were 2 main reasons:

1) The chemistry between Peet and Kutcher is as good as I've seen. I really question how there are people on here that didn't see that (I'm assuming by the comments that they were blinded by pre existing biases against these actors). The scene in the car with her singing and him trying to tell a story is one of the best I've seen for this sort of light genre.

2) At the root of it, it was a very relatable story. Sure, there was lots of far fetched scenarios, but I'm sure many of us have the one that got away, or the one where the timing never worked out (though in life, there isn't usually the happy ending to this story, and that's fine) Anyhow, I keep coming back to this film. As I tell people, I'm sure I overrate this film above its merits. But it's simple. These movies are supposed to entertain you, and pull you into the story. It's all subjective, but mission accomplished for me. Rent it if you want a light night in.

$#*! My Dad Says (2010–2011)
2/10
Pilot OK, 2nd episode unwatchable
4 October 2010
I really, really wanted to like this show. Boston Legal was one of my favorite shows ever, and while James Spader was the main reason for that, Denny Crane certainly had the endearing moments. So I was looking forward to more politically incorrect lines from the Shat.

Also, the twitter feed, and the book S#!t my dad says, were phenomenal. I read the book straight through in a night and couldn't stop laughing.

I had a bad feeling that they couldn't translate this to a TV show. And all my worst fears came through. No profanity, and the attempt to create the emotion of the book onto the screen. The show just wasn't funny. The laugh track, and the ridiculous side plot in the second episode, reek of trying to hard.

Repackage the show on HBO, leave in the profanity, and tell some of the stories out of the book. Then you've got me. Until then, this show will quickly become s#!t that no one is watching.

Blown Away (1994)
Solid All Around Movie
14 December 2002
From reading the other comments on this site, I was surprised at all the negativity surrounding this film. Sure, the accents are probably bad, but everyone knows that Hollywood can't do accents and aging.

This is not a movie to be picked apart, but one to be enjoyed. Sure, the characters aren't completely fleshed out, but there is enough depth for you to feel for them. The action is good, and despite many contrary opinions, I think the pacing is good too.

One of the high points of this film was the sequence where the wife and daughter are in the house and the audience is left suspecting there may be a bomb plant. The camera shots that frame the stove turning on, the light bulb, the phone jack, etc. were done very well, and suspensefully, though I suspect this well done sequence is what is making many people call this film "slow."

Finally, the use of "The Joshua Tree" by U2 was a really nice touch.

Overall, this film is not outstanding, but if you want a movie that is relatively light, but has some comedy, drama, suspense and action all mixed in, then check it out.
