Secrets & Lies (1996)
great movie that is very overlooked
after looking through some stuff on the oscars i realized that this film had been up for many including best picture, actress, supporting actress, screenplay, and director.i had never heard of it before.now i want to own it. it is incredibly well done because a lot of it was improvised.it very aptly represents a family situation when there are secrets and lies buried underneath everything and what can happen when they come to the service.another reason i feel this is a well done piece is because it is made in england and it focuses on the relationships between the people.if it had been made in america, racial tension would have been brought into the story, thus screwing up the message of the film. i honestly think this is one of the best films i have ever seen. mike leigh did an amazing job directing. great performances by brenda blethyn(who won the cannes award for best actress, the golden globe, the british oscar, and was nominated for an academy award),the guy who played maurice, marianne jean-baptiste, and many others.
Enchanted April (1991)
great movie
enchanted april is an exceedingly well done piece.even though the cast is dominantly female, it is not especially a chick flick which is good.it is rare that someone sees a movie that is done so well and recieves so much credit when it is made with no profanity at all. this is a nice movie to watch with your mom. also an 8 year old or a 40 year old would like it. it is not just designed for adults.every character goes through a change. joan plowright was nominated for an academy award for best supporting actress and she won the golden globe as did miranda richardson.it was also up for best adapted screenplay at the academy awards.i rented this movie because i kept seeing it on the shelf at every movie place and then i heard about it somewhere so i rented it. very delightful and very overlooked.rent it and see for yourself.
Slaves of New York (1989)
very cool little film
this is a very cool little film.i rented it because i really dig the actors that are in it.this film apply represents the artsy community and how they all hang out and go to parties together.maybe its not for everyone, because since its independent its not effervescing with action scenes. the pace of the movie is cool because it is just like real life.you go places and meet people and try to pursue goals that may or may not work out. its important that artsy people should see this film, because everyone in it represents someone they know.great cameos from mercedes ruehl, stanley tucci, steve buscemi, and bernadette also does a great job as eleanor who lives with her crass and selfish boyfriend.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
classic 80's
this movie is awesome.its not going to freak you out so dont expect that.the suspense is incredibly fast. it is also one of the few thriller movies that is well acted and directed and written. i could watch this movie several times again.however since it was made in 1987, the setting is funny, especially the party scene where everyone is in 80's clothes(which are now so dated).michael douglas does an amazing job and i think that this is glenn close's best role.she does it so well, even though the role had been previously rejected by miranda richardson and sharon stone had even auditioned for the part before it came to close.anne archer does a great job too.good movie.
