Mr. Fix It (2006)
Gem in the rough. Fun DVD!
Wonderful and charming film. I was dragged, kicking and screaming to the TV set by my girlfriend, but what a surprise!
Without spoiling the surprise, let me say that the film's a contemporary romantic comedy but, instead of the usual baloney and narcissim of recent film releases, the film
David Boreanaz shows a great facility for comedy- something we hadn't seen before, and Alana De La Garza is quite charming.
I don't want to ruin the surprise, so I'll say Paul Sorvino can really sing.
Otherwise, a great supporting cast, too.
We rent many films, but WE PURCHASED THIS ONE and gave copies to the relatives (only the ones we like) for the holidays.
The Independent (2000)
Woody Allen's HOLLYWOOD ENDING pales by comparison...
First came Minnelli's THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, then Blake Edward's caustic S.O.B., ...but it took another decade before a great comedic film-maker succeeded on his compelling "take" on Hollywood: Steven Kessler's THE INDEPENDENT!
Although the film's been mired in some degree of legal uncertainty, someday-- as a bar of Ivory Soap rises to the surface, (no matter where you put it!), this riotous look at low-budget, sub-Corman/ par Troma film-making will make it to cable and DVD!
You'll laugh so much..., well, don't forget to pick up the Depends after you leave Blockbuster!
I was lucky enough to see it at a festival screening, and I hope you can, someday, see it, too.
They Were Expendable (1945)
Duuuudes... Forget about the insipid PEARL HARBOR...
One of the best films to be inspired by WWII, to which THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES and MEN IN WAR serves as a nice companion pieces, directed by the best (and most prolific of Twentieth Century Director: JOHN FORD.
Mounted in a lavish manner but maintaining the POV of the men that served in the tragic fall of the Philippines..., well- just buy it or rent it and you will see for yourself.
The Last Brickmaker in America (2001)
Great MOW! Too bad the producers still owe me 400 bucks...
...a thoughtfully written, performed, and photographed Movie of the Week, which took full advantage of rustic rural and suburban locations in and near Charlotte, NC.
Compared to the usual "grind 'em out" television long-form projects, there is a lot of texture and attention to detail: cast performances, production design, cinematography, and even if the casting and direction of the background players.
- a film very enjoyable to view!
