CSI: Miami: Hurricane Anthony (2003)
Please know what "Landfall" is.
I love CSI Miami, but perhaps the writers could have done a little more research on hurricanes. In the opening scene when the rain starts falling the girl says, "Oh my God, landfall." That is so way off base. Landfall is when the eye moves onto shore. The coast has been experiencing hurricane force winds and rain HOURS before landfall. A few drops of rain doesn't constitute landfall. I live on the coast and have been through many hurricanes and I know what landfall is. The plot was weak and the factual inaccuraries with hurricanes makes the weak plot even weaker. This is the second worst CSI Miami ever made. (The Tsunami is the first.)
Friday Night Lights (2004)
Reality Shines in this Movie
As a Texas native, and a person who attended high school in Texas, this film shows Texas high school from a realistic perspective.
I knew there would be the inevitable comparisons to Varsity Blues. I enjoyed Varisty Blues, but there were several inconsistencies with the way Texas high school football functions.
Friday Night Lights shows the weekly struggles and triumphs that goes along with a crazed Texas football town.
I left the theatre feeling like I had just gone through my senior year of high school again even though I didn't go to Odessa Permian.
This is an excellent movie and is a must see. As far as Varsity Blues goes, it's fiction. Friday Night Lights is the REAL thing.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Absolutely Spectacular!
This film is absolutely spectacular. The acting is wonderful. The scenery is beautiful.
Kidman deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance as does Zellweger.
I have seen many films that have plots revolving around the Civil War. This one is far the best.
Varsity Blues (1999)
Blues Contradicts Itself
While this does give a good image of texas high school football, the script contradicts itself in several places. When Coach Kilmer mentions no district title - no shot at state. This is way off base. It is not only the district champs that advance in Texas to the playoffs, but rather the top three teams. Furthermore in the end if they won why did it end that night?
Texas high school football coaches are tough disciplinarians but they aren't heartless people like Kilmer is projected.
Still while it does contradict itself it is still an enjoyable film.

Urban Cowboy (1980)
Urban Cowboy is not realistic Texas
Having grown up in Texas, and less than 15 miles from what used to be Gilley's, I can tell you that this movie is nauseating. The majority of Texans do not live like this movie indicates. The plot is weak, and the fake accents are amusing, and it reinforces the stereotypical image that all Texans are beer drinking, honky-tonkin', rednecks. The horribly fake Texas accents is what kills it for me. True, there is a certain Texas twang to most Texans' accents, but these people overdo it. You can't get someone from New Jersey and Ohio to do Texas accents. It just doesn't work. John Travolta should have stuck to disco-dancing or the 50s. Debra Winger was more convincing as Wonder Girl than she is as a Texan.
