Dune (2021)
Very dull - but beautiful pictures and banging audio
I saw this is IMAX and didn't really care for it. The movie is just too cold and detattached, none of the actors ever change their facial expressions (with the exception of Jason Momoa, who feels like he should be in another movie).
I just don't think any of the characters are engaging or particularly interesting, so in the end we just see beautiful pictures and get our ears ringing from all the noise and don't even remember what the movie was about.
I'm starting to get suspicious when someone says that a movie HAS TO BE SEEN in IMAX, or in 3D, or in Dolby, or whatever. If a movie needs all these gimmicks to work, then it is not a movie, it's a theme park ride.
I mean, I first saw "Alien" on a 14-inch TV set and I was amazed. The movie scared the hell out of me, I just loved it. I've also seen "The Sound of Music" countless times on TV, on DVD and on Blu-ray and it always warms my heart and makes me fall in love with Julie Andrews. I saw this in a movie theater once, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the movie. It didn't change my feelings towards the songs, the characters or the plot. Actually, I prefer watching this at home, in my home theater, with full control over the audio volume and being able to pause for restroom breaks.
In short, if a movie is really good, it can engage you and make you fall in love with the characters even on a small screen TV with no pumped up audio. Watching a movie in IMAX is fun, of course, but if a movie NEEDS TO BE SEEN in IMAX to be appreciated, then it's likely the movie is all flair and no content... much like this "Dune".
High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008)
Good movie, but where are the Evans?
I just saw this on an advanced screening and I really liked the movie, but I felt Ryan was underused. He has NO lines of dialog - at least, none that I can remember of. My favorite characters in HSM 1 and 2 were the Evans siblings, and I really wish they got more screen time in HSM 3. But they were practically ignored and Troy and Gabriella sing ALL the songs. Other thing that annoyed me: they introduce the "new generation" (the ones who are probably going to star in High School Musical 4) and these new guys are just lame. There's a British Sharpay and a skater/ basketball dude with really greasy hair, and they are not funny at all. Those things aside, this was a great movie, with lots of amazing choreography and fun scenes, all revolving around Troy's old dilemma: basketball or theater? It's not greater in scope than the other HSM movies (actually, it's a little bit more cheesy), but it's an 8 out of 10 movie. It could be better, tough, if Sharpay and Ryan got more spotlight.
Stay (2005)
Stay - another great Marc Foster film!
Hello, everyone! I have just seen "Stay" in a movie festival that is going on here, in Rio de Janeiro. I must confess that the very first minutes of the movie were very boring, but the movie gets tense and bizar when people start bleeding for no reason, and the character's names get changed - and Sam, the character played by Ewan Mc Gregor, only seems bothered to be called Henry one time. As blind people recover and gain sight, and dead people come back to haunt Sam, I started to make hundreds of theories, trying to explain what was happening. But the ending is so simple - and yet, so complex - that I just can't wait to see this movie again. Though Marc Foster is a "new" director (his curriculum includes only "Monster's Ball", "Finding Neverland" and other 2 less known movies), the guy shows great competence behind the cameras, using non-conventional angles and a very interesting film edition, to get the audience involved in the confusion that is going on Sam's mind - or perhaps, another character's mind. A great movie that you must not miss!
Bossa Nova (2000)
From Brazil With Love
I must confess: I didn't expect to see a good movie when I went to the theater, but after it, I felt pride of being brazilian! The movie is perfect: the story is very good, the actors and actresses are playing wonderful ropes and the music... Ah, the music! Very good songs. This movie may not get the Best Foreign Movie Oscar, but it's the best brazilian movie I've ever seen.
