Leguizamo Does America (2023)
I liked it..but
How do you do a show about the Latino experience in America without including Texas? He should have cut either Washington DC or Chicago and added San Antonio. Then taken a side trip to Rio Grande Valley or Houston.
Texas has 11.4 million Latinos, second only to California's 15.75 million. And the population in TX is growing faster.
Maybe he'll toss us a bone if there's a second season. I understand that New York City and Hollywood harbor a soft bias against Texas, based on ignorance. But to ignore the numbers in Texas appears to be a conscious decision.
Come on down to Garland, Texas John, and order some authentic Mexican street tacos from 24/7 Tacos at the Shell station. They never close. Just remember to pay first at the register.
We Are Who We Are (2020)
Outstanding cinematography showcases the beauty of Italy
Luca Guadagnino is a master of direction and storytelling. The lush Italian countryside is photographed beautifully.
Of course I know him from Call Me By Your Name, so I expected film-quality production values, excellent writing, a good cast, and fine acting. HBOMAX delivers.
WRWWR is a character study, of people young and not-so-young, learning how to cope in a new country, making new friends, navigating life any way they can. It's not for those who crave superhero vehicles, non-stop, violent action, or the paint-by-numbers-everything-turns-out-great-at-the-end pabulum one finds on family dramas on network TV.
If you don't like the show, or the values it represents, don't watch it. There's tens of thousands of hours of stuff out there, and the list of streaming services is long.
I just read that Reba McEntire is returning to television in an adaptation of Fried Green Tomatoes. Maybe that's the kind of family-oriented stuff that some of the people on here who don't like WRWWR can get into.
Don't get me wrong. Reba is a legend. They don't hand out Kennedy Center Honors indiscriminately. I'm just not interested in Patricia Heaton-style comedy.
The USA is changing. New stories are being told, none involving a mother who wears pearls and a dress while vacuuming the living room while dad, in his smoking jacket, with necktie, repairs a broken extension cord in his garage workshop, pipe-smoking.
This new world is here, whether anyone likes it or not. I think the show is great.
