Riot (1996)
Heat Wave (1990) (TV) is more entertaining and far more enlightening
Heat Wave, TNT's movie about the 1965 Watts Riots is a far better film than Riot and handles many similar themes far more successfully. Riot, on the hand does a lot of yakking but little is really talked about. In trying to say "everything" about the causes and concerns that lead to the L.A. Riots, it ends up becoming totally unfocused and rather tedious. This is too important a subject to be given such short shrift and lack of real insight.
Possessed (2000)
Thought-provoking, well written, acted and directed!
The true story that inspired the Exorcist is extremely well written, directed and acted and in many ways it is more interesting (and far less exploitive!) and thought-provoking than the movie it inspired.
Performances by Timothy Dalton and Henry Czerny were topnotch and Christopher Plummer as the Archbishop of St. Louis was absolutely fabulous.
The screenplay by Michael Lazarou and Steven desouza was compelling, moving and frequently funny when it needed to be. Desouza did a skillful job of directing the film.
