Missing (2012)
Such promise, but so disappointing...
Missing starts off great, an emotional and somewhat realistic depiction of a former CIA operative trying to locate her missing son, through some cunning and non-to-high tech stuff, an excellent first fight scene showing the former operative has some fighting chops, but no dumb ass kung fu moves... until she escapes 3 bad guys on a Vespa doing a wheelie and taking down two bad guys on motor bikes in the process, the scene gave me goosebumps it was so lame... and by the way she was of course wearing high heel cork shoes the entire time! Then we go downhill even more... we are introduced to her Italian former contact, whom she obviously slept with, and this guy is extremely uninteresting and boring. We are also introduced to the CIA field office chief in Paris who is trying to track her down, and this guy is a walking, talking, breathing blob of the worst spy clichés there ever were... and on top of that extremely annoying.
On the up side Ashley Judd delivers on the acting here as Rebecca Winstone, making it easy to root for her and sympathise with her struggle, she's even somewhat believable in the fight scenes, not something I thought Judd would pull off but she does. The show is green screen heavy but aside from that has some good actual locations, obviously not shot in downtown LA like everything these days...
I hope it gets to live long enough to show some improvement, but I don't think it will, this is going in the cancellation toilet after half a season max...
Ultraviolet (2006)
The action deliver, the story does not...
This movie has not gotten a fair shake, 4.1 on IMDb? Many worse flicks have at least crawled over 5... I think the fans of Equilibrium set their expectations to high and got disappointed...
I do admit this movie is no masterpiece, and does not live up to Equilibrium... however I would not be writing this review if it were not for the action scenes.
Silly and over the top yes, but insanely entertaining, and Milla really delivers here. The colour style and production design doesn't disappoint either.
Give this movie a break, see it if you need to see a silly and visually stunning action flick.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: 73 Seconds (2011)
Ted Danson shoots... and misses!
The long awaited Ted Danson premiere episode is here, and its not as good as it could have been, clearly not as good as Lawrence Fishbourne's first episode for sure.
The episode starts with a promising criminal case, an all out shooting-stabbing-octopus-ant infested chaos in a glamorous hotel tram in Vegas that transpired in only 73 seconds, but what they do with this brilliant idea? Shove it back to the B-story making the new boss of the team Danson clashing-not clashing with the team the A story...
Danson's character is very confusing, first he comes of as a really nice happy-go-lucky guy with a lot of funny quirks up his sleeve, and then moments later he grills Nick on not filing a report on time because Nick wanted to take another look at the crime scene first, in an extremely cliché horrible boss kind of way... Then he goes back to being the nice happy-go-lucky guy even performing actions that he himself criticised the members of the team for doing... This is just plain bad character development and writing! Fishbourne's character was in so many ways superior to Danson's...
This new by the book" policy that is made very clear to the team if they want to stay, is not a good road for the show, its like Survivor: CSI! This who gets voted off next" vibe is just killing the great dynamic that the team on the show has always had. What the show needs is to go back to the old complex cases and great settings and focus less on destroying the team dynamic, it's worked for this many years, don't mess it up! Im gonna give this new season a shot but if this downward spiral continues, Im gonna say goodbye to this old favourite of mine...
Burlesque (2010)
Delivers what it promises, and more!
Despite the predictable premise, the cliché overall storyline and it's sometimes painfully stiff out of place dialogue, this movie is a absolute JOY to watch! The writing could have been better, I will give you critics that, but the music, dancing, set design, costumes, atmosphere and pretty much everything else that the filmmakers were actually FOCUSING on is just top notch! I have read a lot of negative reviews that mostly take aim at the storyline and writing but Im telling you, that was not why they made this movie. This movie was made to showcase great music, dancing and everything I mentioned above, not for award winning writing or acting.
Christina Aguilera does a fine job with the acting and superb job with her vocal and dance performances, Cher is great in her music numbers but her acting was a little bit stiff, Stanley Tucci delivers well despite the fact his role was extremely cliché, but my favourite performance by far, was by Alan Cumming, he is HILARIOUS in this! But his role was way to small, perhaps 10 minutes of screen time in total, but totally worth watching! Overall, if you like a great dance musical number with a happy ending, this is for you!
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Mascara (2009)
Big heap of trash
For the exciting opening sequence announcing the arrival of the 200'th episode of CSI, this episode was nothing but a disappointment. 1/4 of the episode delivered boring interviews with mediocre guest actors with nothing to offer, not humor, not suspense, nothing! I've liked the 9'th season so far but this episode was a total let-me-down, at least they should have picked another episode to present as their 200'th vehicle and left this episode at a random slot, so that the milestone episode wouldn't have sucked completely.
The only upside to this train-wreck of an episode was the performance of the stunt woman in the opening sequence where the victim is being killed, but thats about it.
Sanctuary (2008)
Great start but I sense cancellation
The webisodes were fantastic to say the least, low budget, with impressive performances, especially the action scenes, and great visual style! The main series doesn't disappoint, at first, the first 4 episodes were exciting, well written and a pleasure to watch...
However I find episodes 5 and onwards going downhill, fast! Still strong on the visual, however I find storyline lacking, they of course took the great storyline from the webisodes, expanded and added more scenes for TV broadcast, which was great. But when they ran out of original storyline its like they just whipped up some non-canon story's to fill in episodes not regarding to the big picture of the show.
I for example did NOT like episode 6: A bunch of furry little cute animals running around Sanctuary in a killing frenzy? And a girl visiting can tell what the cute, furry little killing bunny's are feeling through her powers? What??? If they would have played the humor card and tried to be funny I would have given the episode a break, but this episode just shouldn't have happened at all.
Im still tuned in, they have probably finished filming all of season 1 episodes so were probably gonna see them all, but I HOPE the remaining episodes will be more like the first episodes, but there is NO way the show will get another season, trust me on that one.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Cockroaches (2007)
Worst episode ever!!!
This episode has everything it shouldn't have, and lacks everything it should. A depressing side-stepping story with waaay to many lengthy pointless shots and boring dialog's is the LAST thing they need to be doing right now, Especially with Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle) gone for good (if you didn't know this you must have been living in a box). They should be using their already stretched thin charm of the other characters, make some new interesting cases and introduce a replacement for Sara Sidle. I just HOPE this boring, pointless and stupid side story with Warrick doesn't tie up the rest of the freaking series! WORST episode of the entire run!!!
The Moment of Silence (2004)
Are you kidding me???
I am a Die Hard fan of the point-and-click adventure game gender, even now at days when they are having a low streak I still thrive to find good titles, which are hard to find believe me, mostly you come up with average games that offer some kind of plus signs despite their flaws, however...
...Moment of Silence can be summarized in one word: CRAP! When I played through this heap of garbage... I was only comforted by the fact that I had bought Broken Sword 1 (my favorite game from way back) from Amazon and that was the game I was gonna play when this one was finished... for the first time in my life, I was disappointed of how LONG a game was, usually they don't last long enough but unfortunately this one didn't STOP lasting! Moment of silence has OVERLY long dialogs with limited purpose, POOR voice acting, average non interesting graphics and backgrounds, and not to mention... a HORRIBLE control system, its HARD to mess up a control system when you make a POINT-AND-CLICK adventure game but these people at House of Tales somehow managed to do so...
Avoid at all cost!!! If you want good adventure games: The Longest Journey and its sequel, Broken Sword series, Syberia 1 and 2, Tunguska Files and many more...
Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997)
Exciting story brought to life
I personally love this movie. I read the book when I was younger and although I don't think the movie does the book justice completely but I really enjoyed it.
The second part of the movie could have used some fixing but it remains exciting just the same.
Julia Ormond does a great job with Smilla and the story keeps you pinned to your seat the whole time. Gabrielle Byrne is a great addition and really a superb actor.
The movie being shot partly in the beautiful Cöbenhagen doesn't hurt either. All the locations in this movie are all outstanding and beautiful.
