Complete waste of time
12 August 2022
Currently available on Netflix. I had to watch the movie over 4 or 5 days because I couldn't take more than 20 minutes of it in one sitting. Incredibly lame writing. No laughs at all. Awful, awful awful movie. Do. Not. Waste. Your. Time.

Starts off great then becomes a torture to watch

Warning: Spoilers
I was in Istanbul when the series premiered, and within days everyone I met had already seen it. Educated, secular people said the show was great, so I gave it a try.

The first episode was brilliant. However, as the show went on, it kept adding more and more characters that somehow were all related to each other in the most ridiculous, absurd way (the show could have been called "Zero Degrees of Separation"). Too many people, too many storylines, too many conflicts to be addressed properly in a mere eight episodes. The show does a very superficial, soap-opera style treatment of the issues, and in the final two episodes they all magically get resolved at the same time (save for the rich guy cursed with eternal unhappiness).

The series boasts great acting and beautiful cinematography. For reasons that escape me, unfortunately it excessive use of melodramatic background music that was in jarring contrast with the overall elegance of the show. The dialogues were often lachrymose to match the bad music; they facile and predictable.

By the fourth episode I had lost all interest in the show and given up hope that it would get better. I did watch every episode, but it took a lot of energy to plod through them.

Note that the 10-star reviews seldom bother to explain what makes the show so good in the reviewers' opinion. They just string together a never ending stream of superlatives and hope that will be enough to convince others of the show's greatness. Don't believe them :-)

Unwatchable if you're over 10

"Miss Tacuarembó" is a summer flick for children. If you bear that in mind maybe you can enjoy - or at least overlook - the formulaic storyline, the overdone acting, the really lame jokes and the bad singing of a cast largely comprised by children. It's a Rio de la Plata equivalent of Xuxa or Os Trapalhōes from Brazil, or Hanna Montana for that matter. I didn't notice anything particularly brilliant about the lighting or the alleged Hollywood values. I will admit the songs are somewhat catchy and will please the kids. It conveys a message of tolerance that is welcome, and two of the actors made it big in Argentina in a good-humored, wildly successful soap that dealt with homosexuality. That said, I can't imagine anyone over 10 being engrossed and entertained by this movie.
