Justice League (2017)
New leadership is a must
Saw the film last night and it was a hot mess. Not a terrible film, but very flawed and definitely below average. There were some entertaining scenes, and I thought Affleck, Gadot, Mamoa and Miller did the best with what they were given. I'd see a standalone movie with each of their characters if it were done well. But my sweet lord... why can't they get this universe right? I want to like it! These are awesome characters (not just in this film, in all the DCEU films so far). The source material is excellent. The actors are solid. It comes down to the writing, the directing, and the guidance of the studio. They just can't get it right. Even the CGI was absolute garbage. With the budget they had, there's no excuse for how bad the effects were, especially on Steppenwolf, Cyborg and Cavill's now infamous upper lip.
They have to make major changes. Zack Snyder cannot be allowed to touch these films anymore. He's a one-note director, and that one note is incredibly dull. WB also needs to either put new people in charge of the universe or give up the rights, since it's clear the current leadership doesn't know what they're doing with these characters on the big screen. New EPs are desperately needed who will actually see this dreck and force changes rather than just yessing it through the system. Who actually thought this was a fitting representation of the greatest superhero team in the comic world? How could they let something so clearly subpar hit the screen? Do they have no self-awareness at all? Those people need to go.
Either fix it or just stop and let someone else run with it.
Very Bad Things (1998)
people just don't get dark comedy
it's kinda sad. everyone's saying this movie is awful. it's deplorable. it's disgusting. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE YOU MORONS!!! it's a dark comedy. it's supposed to be absolutely wretched. that's the point! it's supposed to make you cringe. for all those of you who hated this movie or found it reprehensible, peter berg has taken you all on a ride! for those of us who actually understand and love dark comedy, this movie is brilliant. you're supposed to see these awful scenes and laugh because of their absurdity. this movie is hilarious and intelligent. look at the title for crying out loud. very bad things. did you expect it to just be a clever name?
X2 (2003)
can't wait for X3
i was so stoked when the x-men were finally brought to life on the big screen that nothing could have disappointed me. everyone ripped the first movie, but i loved it.
X2 was even better. nightcrawler. can't say enough about him, and alan cumming for that matter. humor, depth, awesome special effects and costume brought him to life like none of the other characters tackled in the two movies. he was exactly, EXACTLY what nightcrawler always seemed to be in the comic book.
as for storylines, i liked how they kept the plot for the most part relevant to the comic (like the role of mastermind as well as pyro going with magneto and mystique to join the brotherhood).
can't wait for X3. they once again did a great job hinting what the story's gonna be. obviously it's going to get into the phoenix saga a bit and explain what happened to jean. i can also see some new badies coming out (blob, quicksilver maybe) to add more diversity to the brotherhood. hopefully, they'll develop beast after his split second cameo in X2. same w/ gambit after they toyed with our emotions by flashing his name on stryker's computer screen. colossus will definitely have a part after being toyed with in X2 (just like iceman and pyro were in X-Men).
another hope is that rebecca romijn-stamos will get more screen time. not mystique, rebecca romijn-stamos. she was so gorgeous in that bar scene, it puzzles me that they don't just get rid of the silly scaly costume and the grating voice effects and just paint her blue, dye her hair red, and give her the tight white costume that the character really has.
after seeing how much better the second movie was (though the first was great), i sooooo can't wait for the next one, and the next one, and the next one. think about it. they can go with this thing forever. all the storylines and characters and depth of the x-men comics... as long as they can get the same people and a competant director, there's no reason this franchise should go bad. can't wait for X4, X5, APOCALYPSE!!!, mr. sinister, omega red, x-force, shatterstar, angel, the sentinels... it's too exciting to put into words
Spider-Man (2002)
best comic book movie of all-time
what can't i say about this movie. as a big spider-man buff, i was almost brought to tears by how well this movie matched the comic book. as a movie buff, i was captivated by how brilliant the film was as a whole. it was purposely cheesy at parts (i.e. goblin screaming "WE'LL MEET AGAIN!"), had a strong wit, and was vibrant and full of color. tobey maguire has always been a favorite of mine, and he didn't disappoint, playing the perfect shy, calm character that peter parker is. they couldn't have picked a better face than willem dafoe for the green goblin. and i've always loved kirsten dunst for numerous reasons. the only comic book movie that ever compared was the original batman. but i think with batman, people blew it up because of the sheer star power of the movie. taking nothing away from maguire, dafoe, and dunst, this movie didn't need a star-studded cast to capture the audience. they just nailed every little detail that brought the comic book to life. they didn't try to make it realistic like x-men, and they didn't try to make it overly-dramatic like superman. where all other comic book movies tried to be movies first, and capture the essense of the comic book second, this movie took everything right from the pages and put them onto the screen. i can't wait for the sequel (there will so be one) where he takes on the lizard (he mentioned dr. connors in the movie), venom, doc octopus, or whoever. it will be great.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
2001 saved the best for last.
wes anderson and owen wilson never cease to amaze me... literally. every time i think they've done it, they come up with something else. well, twice at least. i didn't think bottle rocket could be topped, then came rushmore. how could a movie top rushmore? well the royal tenenbaums more than does it.
it's a shame this movie had to come out to nationwide release 3 days before the end of 2001, because it was clearly the greatest movie of the year... BY FAR. every movie i saw this year didn't do very much for me. most were incredible disappointments or just okay, save snatch, made, zoolander, mosters inc. and jay and silent bob (off the top of my head). this one... wow. i'm speechless.
it's a shame that the oscar means nothing anymore, because if it did, anderson, wilson, hackman, paltrow, and luke wilson would definitely walk away with a little gold guy. it really makes me sad to see brilliance go unappreciated. well julia roberts will at least have some competition when she wins this year for the mexican. god bless wes.
Zoolander (2001)
i almost threw up
this was one of the funniest movies start to finish i've ever seen. god bless ben stiller. stiller, ferrell, and wilson are beyond perfection, and the endless cameos only add to the humor. david bowie was amazing. as was vince vaughan, who was in the movie for about 7 minutes, yet did not have 1 line. brilliant. throughout the entire length of the movie, there were about 3 minutes that i wasn't laughing hysterically.
Office Space (1999)
"what's wrong with you people???"
as you can see, i used a quote from one of the funniest moments of my favorite film of all time to sum up my feelings on the ratings Office Space has received. How anyone with any sense of what a good comedy or a good movie is could rate this below a 10 is just absurd. This movie is absolute comedic brilliance. not a dull moment. so much subtle humor, and you pick up something new every time! plus, how can you lose with a jump to conclusions mat!?! everyone who didn't rate this movie a 10 can go to hell. Office Space is the greatest comedy ever made.
