This was (and still is) a great movie, but I don't understand the reasons for the re-release (a.k.a. directors cut).
"Friday night is Yankee night" and "I own the place...why don't you grow up" only add to the personalities of the characters.
And (growing up on the VHS version) I prefer the "I'm a believer" sound track over the Four Tops. The mood is much better on the older VHS release.
Again, I love this movie and I recommend it to everyone, but the original (and VHS) release was much better. Sure the story is still the same, but the little nuances are gone.
Apparently only 90 seconds (or so) were cut from the movie. I can't imagine that these 90 seconds make the movie any worse. But Joel and Ethan seemed to think so.
Maybe they thought this was another opportunity to "screw with us" as they usually do.
