Voodoo Academy (2000)
what's with all the manly rubbing?
this is bottom of the barrel work at best. i just finished working on the directors (david decoteau)latest movie which is called "wolves of wall street." i saw this at the video store and decided to check it out so as to see what "wolves..." might have ended up like. holy S! voodoo academy isn't so bad that it's funny, it's so bad that i actually began to weep and am currently looking to have my name removed from the credits of "wolves.." i don't know how people like decoteau keep scrounging up enough money and backing to make movies. this movie had no redeeming qualities.....NONE. there is a total of about 30 minutes of footage of young men rubbing themselves in boxer shorts while they sleep. why? why so many minutes? the movie degenerates from a bad horror flick to a really long and limp wristed infomercial for young men's boxer briefs. homoeroticism needs to be subtle like in "Top Gun" or "Tango and Cash". i wouldn't let this guy direct a puppet show at my grandmothers old age home. never watch this movie, you'll thank me.
Enemy of the State (1998)
all in all, not too bad
not too bad, but also not that good. will smith and gene hackman headline a very solid cast. there are many fine young actors (seth green, barry pepper, etc.) in this film. however, good acting can't always save a movie. the first 3/4 of this film were extremely entertaining. the invasion of privacy theory is frightening. god only knows what i have been caught doing, if satellites can really zoom in that close. everything is kosher until the end of the movie. it was horrible. to say that i was disappointed would be a massive understatement. tony scott also directed true romance. hell of a job on that one tony! this one, not so good. he basically steals his own ending. that was enough to ruin the entire movie for me. i don't like recycled endings. there was absolutely no reason to go back and do the same thing (exactly the same thing) over again. why? this film had so much potential. watch this film until the end and then turn it off and watch the end of true romance. notice any similarities?
Thursday (1998)
one man's pov
i am a big tarantino fan. it appears that director skip woods is too. after the success of pulp fiction, there has been a wave of "tarantinoesque" movies. some of them are very good (check out boondock saints). thursday is not. i never thought i'd say this, but this film is too graphic in the sex and violence departments. paulina porizkova screws thomas janes' brains out just seconds before she has her own brains blown all over his forehead. is that really necessary? as i see it, the only reason skip woods even invented the character of dallas was for this one scene. other than that, she is totally unecessary. however, not as unecessary as the opening scene where they kill the convenience store clerk for absolutely no reason at all. the film tries to balance the gratuitous sex and violence with witter banter. this doesn't work either. the dialogue seems strained and it's not really even that funny. there are way too many good movies of this genre for anyone to waste there time on this. if you feel the urge, just take a deep breath and rent pulp fiction again.
