Comedy?

Comedies are meant to be funny. This isn't by a long stretch.

Artistic license - but it's not a documentary
3 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So, true to life this may not be but Denzel is on fire in this while Crowe is never better as a the neurotic cop/lawyer.

The premise is fairly standard - cops and robbers. But there's a fair bit more to it than that.

It's brilliantly written, the pace is excellent and while the story is exactly that, a story, the film works in every ways.

The interview scene is up there with De Niro and Pacino in heat.

And the scene where Frank is coming out of the church is beautifully understated.

Outstanding all round. And 2 hours 40 minutes absolutely flys by.

Pulls at your heartstrings

Films are meant to do something to you aren't they?

Smile, laugh, cry, etc.

If this film doesn't do something to you then films probably aren't for you. It will probably do different things to different people but move you it will.

There are obviously different strands and stories but fundamentally its about the human element of the care system. Its success and failures. And people trying their best in difficult circumstances.

Very heartwarming and a must watch.

Nothing new to see

Warning: Spoilers
Its a reasonable film but there was not an awful lot that was original about it. It seemed like it could have just as easily been an elongated episode of NYPD blue or the like.

Decent performance in the lead role and it seemed the main question in the film was about his morals - for me, that still remains unanswered as the source of the criminal investigations were a little hazy as were the political connotations at the end.

A comic book story turned on its head
22 December 2019
Cards on the table, I am not a fan of the genre at all and never have been. The much lauded Dark Knight included - visually great but the story never interested me.

But this is different. And despite trying to go in with an open mind, there was still a cynical thought in there that its still a kids comic adaptation. It clearly isn't. Its dark. Very dark. And all the better for it.

The storyline is not overly complicated and there are excellent tie ins with the franchise but this is purely about Phoenix who is breathtaking. I cant recall a leading actor putting himself as visually on the line since Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant.

The ending probably lends itself to a follow up and as much as I'm generally against such things, Phoenix in the role will ensure this former reluctant viewer will eagerly await it.
