The Northman (2022)
Another One Hit Wonder
Well maybe 2 because The Lighthouse is pretty good. I really like The VVitch though and was excited to see the 2 latest movies from this director.
Unfortunately, the pattern I've observed lately, is that in these intellectually challenged days, sometimes, a young director pops on to the scene and manages to make one good movie, their first. Sometimes the second too, but no more. They manage to capture a moment of the Zeitgeist while they're still young, but then the quality drops like a zeppelin. It is so true that the "G" drops with age. The director of Donnie Darko springs to mind, but there are others. There will be no more directors that will be able to sustain the level of quality until their old age like Kubrick.
The Northman was a let down, and it wasn't even well directed like some have said. There are so many goofy moments... The picture wasn't as bad as the Oscar winning Lighthouse but I still needed to adjust the brightness to make it watchable. When will this 70% dark screen trend go away? We're supposed to be enjoying our new big flat screens... It's probably tied to the lack of talent, they don't show much because they have nothing to tell.
Rick and Morty: Childrick of Mort (2020)
Cowardice of the writers to do Zeus instead of God
There was a very ignorant reviewer who wrote this:
5) The recreation of biblical stories was 'fun' but still did not make any sense in the context of the story. Very forced and pretentious.
If only it was true? Unfortunately, it's not. How can you mix the anti-human Christianity with the amazing Greek religion? The latter was real because the gods were coded after psychological tendencies. Zeus exists in human nature; the Christian god is the one that is fake in the equation of humanity's history, not Zeus.
And Hera was Zeus' wife, not Gaia, as she was Uranus' consort. However, given how new-age hipsters tried to revive her, it would have been fun to pair her up with the Christian god and have him pass away, like everyone with more than a few glia cells should know by now that he did.
I'm very disappointed how the writers twisted mythology and refrained, out of cowardice, to make a very good episode about the Christian defunct god. I will not watch this show again because of this episode.
The Untitled Kartik Krishnan Project (2010)
"A film, within a film, within a film
I saw this one at TIFF (Transylvania International Film Festival), in Cluj Napoca. Every year there is a film that stands out before the others and this time it was, to my surprise, an Indian film.
It's the story of Kartik Krishnan, a software engineer who also manages a movie blog, where he sees a picture of an Indian director with Tarantino. He contacts him and he explains, when they have the meeting, that he's a big fan of Quentin and tells him all the movies he's seen (including Memento which is Nolan's - which was maybe an intentional mistake by the director but I don't care because I don't like either one of them). Anyway, they decide to make a film together, with a script inspired by Kartik's female colleague, which he secretly loves. Nothing special about that, and it's probably for that reason that the director decides to turn the movie around. I won't say more, as I don't want to be a spoiler, but the twist is pretty original and it's definitely worth it. There's also another character which represents the system working against the ones who dare to go beyond the mainstream clichés; and a strange robot which had a peculiar impact on me.
I saw it twice as I do volunteer work for the festival and the second time I had to manage the Romanian subtitles but I could also focus on some details that I missed during the first viewing. Both times the Q&A sessions were very interesting, as the director Srinivas Sunderrajan decided to explain the movie, which was a bold move. I thought I'd be the only one who would like it as I can relate to it personally and it's inspiring for me for a similar project I have in mind; but to my surprised, the rest of the audience, though in small numbers, were very interested in it. The second time he said that he relies on us to spread the word so I'm doing my part by writing the first user review. What's amazing about the film is that it was made using a budget below 1000 $, which shows that everyone can do it without selling out, at least at first when they have no choice. It's in the competition and I hope it wins, because it deserves a prize for a great achievement! Thanks for reading..
