Game of Thrones (2011)
Incredible for the most part
This show was truly something special. Seasons one to four were a masterclass in tension without necessarily needing to resort to action. The politics were intriguing and seeing how people would screw each other over for personal gain was incredible.
Seasons 5 and 6 were also fantastic, they carried on what the first 4 started and were consistent. Battles became more common over character drama, but they were well choreographed and made sense in the story at the time.
Season 7 was pretty bad, everyone's IQ went waaaaay down, but season 8 it's like you can just tell nobody there wanted to make that show anymore. And it's sad. 6 seasons of borderline perfection and they couldn't stick the landing. It's heartbreaking as this could have been the series to truly go toe to toe with the brilliant Breaking Bad, instead we can only imagine what could have been. I just don't think it's possible to have a more disappointing conclusion than this show. Every character arc gets ruined, genuinely. And even the good ideas are far too rushed. Man it hurts.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac Finds His Pride (2018)
Something Special
Sunny is a rather interesting show. What began as a dark and absurdist comedy has slowly been evolving into something new. In the same way other long running shows such as South Park have tried to reinvent the formula in later seasons, Sunny has taken to trying to bring more satire to the table. They have been cleverly mocking aspects of US culture in the last 2 seasons, issues relevant in the contemporary first world and also attempting to further explore the gang and their relationship with one another as they get older and finally begin learning from their mistakes.
What a lot of people fail to realise I think is that; the show isn't going to continue on forever. And when it's been going for this many years change is necessary to keep the show both relevant and interesting. I think the way McElhenney has attempted to reinvent aspects of Sunny is a fantastic and engaging new direction. It will naturally reach its conclusion and when it does, a satisfying ending will be within closer reach as the characters will have completed an arc at this rate, meaning any sort of finale will have a good impact if done right. As opposed to just tapering off and leaving the gang as they begun.
Rob's performance in this episode is outstanding and Devito too. I came close to tears near the end and I think many feel similarly. This is an important moment in Mac's life, and while it certainly means some change in the character I look forward to seeing what direction that may be. All I can say is well done Sunny for never having a dull moment and these last two seasons have been brilliant. Those that disagree mostly romanticise the past a bit much but I understand why as well. But I think people should keep open minds for the show's future.
