Música (2024)
Well done, highly enjoyable
If you're knocking this movie off because a young man of YouTube fame wrote and directed it or because it has puppets, you'll be missing out on a very enjoyable, well done movie.
It is lighthearted, funny, witty, and engaging. The actors did a great job, especially Rudy. I didn't know a lot about Brazilian culture before the movie and it was very refreshing to learn a thing or two about it, without it being an in-your-face ode to Brazilian culture (where only those of the same heritage would get the references, but that wasn't the case).
It's not a musical (thank God) but it has music, and neat one, I should add. I would give it a 10, but I tend to reserve those for groundbreaking films. This one's close, as I haven't seen a lot like it before. (Yes, the plot is quite typical of a love story, but not the style in which it was presented.)
One tiny little note: I wish Rudy (as Director) or his Casting Director would've picked an actress with curly hair or different features to those of Maia Mitchell (Rudy's real-life ex-girlfriend) for the role of Hailey (and a name without a single letter of overlap with Maia's name). The resemblance between the actress and Maia is quite high (sans the Australian accent -- though most of us have heard Maia speak with an American accent for her American roles), and you just don't want people to be like "is that what happened between Rudy & Maia?" or "is that what Maia/her family was like?". If the resemblance was intentional, then it's kind of passive-aggressive and that's messed up.
But regardless ... great movie, loved it, and would watch it again and again.
The Greatest Hits (2024)
Same plot and outcome as "Press Play" (2022)
This movie is a near-exact replica of "Press Play" (2022). I love this type of pop sci-fi movie and anything having to do with music is my jam (hence the 9 score) but I'm puzzled by the redundancy with "Press Play" without credit or reference.
Loved the songs selected for the time travel sessions, though I wonder how many American twentysomethings (Gen Z) would go to a Roxy Music concert, love The The songs, choose to sing karaoke to a 10cc song and know the lyrics, etc. Whenever there's this generational taste disconnect in movie plotlines - especially around music - you can assume the soundtrack is the Director's or Writers' favorite jams and not what characters of the demographics represented in the movie would actually listen to if they were real. I kind of lose the thread of the movie when that happens.
But! It was still enjoyable, the acting was good, the soundtrack is Gen X's delight (my generation), and I'd watching again in a heartbeat. And "Press Play", too.
