Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
not a kid's movie but a movie about kids
I can't believe the horrible things that people are saying about this movie. I thought this movie was very good and very touching. I am just a dumb construction worker and I totally understood the movie. I can't believe that so many people couldn't understand the monsters represented Max's different emotions and psyche. Don't believe all the idiots who say this movie makes no sense and has no plot, it has an excellent plot. This is not a children's movie with a plot for 4 year olds, it is a movie about childhood that makes you use your brain but is still very entertaining at the same time. Yet, it never delivers any heavy-handed message which so many films do these days. If you go to this movie expecting an easy PIXAR like plot then you will be disappointed. Just don't come on here and trash it because you had to use your brain to figure out what was going on. And don't say that just because it has a PG rating that it should be as kids movie and should be simple, they give out PG ratings based on violence, sex and swearing not idiotic plot. In summation, if you don't enjoy thinking about movies and like to be spoon-fed your plots then don't go see this.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Awesome movie, deserves to be top 5!
This movie is amazing! The plot is strong and very thick without ever becoming pretentious or slow. The action scenes are very gritty and real and not full of Hollywood overindulgence and the violence is framed more for poignancy than shock value. It is obviously very influenced by scorscese but has a modern twist. It seems like a blend of Scorscese's camera work and storytelling with the backdrop of urban ghetto dramas like New Jack City or Boyz N the Hood. Even though the movie is subtitled you never feel like you have to watch the bottom of the screen to stay in the movie. You could almost watch the movie on mute and still soak up ninety percent of the film.
I hope that everyone that thinks of themselves as a movie buff sees this movie. As far as I'm concerned it rivals anything in IMDb's top ten.
As a sidenote: I heard about this film when I worked with some Brazilians for a short time. Seu Jorge (knockout ned) is a huge star in South America. He is an actor and musician, and Brazilians worship the guy like a god. I ripped some of his songs from one of the guy's Ipods and have been a huge fan ever since. Seu also has a role in The Life Aquatic, he is the black guy who plays all the music throughout the movie. All the songs are David Bowie songs sang in Portuguese. If anyone wants to try out his music, download "Mangueira", it's my personal favorite.
The Fountain (2006)
piece of crap!
Definitely one of the worst movies I have seen this year. The whole way through I kept thinking it reminded me of "The Cell" or "12 Monkeys" because it was using fancy visuals and flashbacks/forwards to cover up for it's horribly pretentious plot. It seemed like the director wanted to touch on every genre without doing any of them well. The action scenes were ho-hum, the love story was boring, the sci-fi was not very well thought out, the plot was thick and slow and had a horrible finish, The visuals were pretty but nothing spectacular and the filming was way too tight for a film that was hyped as visually stunning. If you want to make a big visual movie then don't have every character framed in superclose-up. All the scenes seemed to be taped in a small room. Even the stupid tree scenes were in a bubble. I don't usually comment on here about movies but after sitting through this piece of crap I felt i needed to warn people.
Don't waste your time.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
second worst comedy ever made
Adam Sandler's Overboard is the worst comedy ever made, this is the second. Although Adam made that at the beginning of his career, not at his peak like Will Ferrel. This movie had so much potential that was wasted. The french guy could have been hilarious, instead it was disgusting. That had to be some of the worst acting I have ever seen. Once again the trailer is better than the movie. Thanks Hollywood! Take my advice, don't waste your time. I need to make ten lines of comment but there is nothing more I can say other than this movie is horrible. So I will just say this, anyone who gave this a high rating is just an immature twelve year old who will laugh any time someone says the F-word or something that is nonsensical and loud. This movie is probably loved by immature twelve year olds.
Poolhall Junkies (2002)
bad movie, guilty pleasure
I don't know why I like this movie. But, I do. The whole quiet as a church line is retarded, I cringe every time it is said. I can't believe no one else brought that up. The shots are not all that hard, and if you watch closely some are unwarranted. Why take a fancy, hard shot when you have a duck in the corner. Your opponent will realize you are a good shot and that they are being hustled. Anyone who watched the hustler or color of money knows that you have to let the opponent think they are better than you. Pulling off crazy shots will impress them and make them not want to bet. Also, they make it sound like this guy has never left his hometown. If he is the "god of pool", why would anyone play him for money? All that said, I still like this movie and have watched it several times and will probably watch it in the future. I guess it is my guilty pleasure movie. Everyone's got one, this one is mine.
Thank You for Smoking (2005)
not worth watching a second time...
I watched You, Me and Dupree before this movie and as bad as that movie was, this one was worse. The defense for cigarettes he uses at the end of the movie is the one he should have been spouting in the beginning. The whole movie is hard to swallow, I can't believe it is so highly rated on IMDb. This movie is just another Hollywood attempt to make regular Joe feel bad about the way he lives. Anyone who rated this movie a six or higher should not be allowed to vote on this website anymore. If this is what people think satire is, then that explains the junk movies Hollywood has been turning out for the last five years. Movies like this are the reason that tickets aren't being sold. I am glad I only rented it, now I can tell the guy working at the video store that it was scratched and get my money back.
