Finestkind (2023)
Fish story with heart
It's a family saga about some very flawed individuals from some very dysfunctional families of their own who come together to try and become a bigger group that is way less than perfect but much more functional. It does start out slow but with each passing scene, the situation keeps taking a more tragic turn. Characters are strong and raw. It's a very nerves are frayed situation from start to finish but the actors do not overplay it. It's a great cast with new and old actors. Tommy Lee Jones is one haggard old sea captain who proudly wears the peril of open water fishing. It's a great tale and worthy of your time.
Lost in Space: Target: Earth (1968)
Attack of the booger or melted candle aliens
"Do not resist, it is futile." Warning from alien to Jupiter 2 crew predating the Borg by decades. It was only a few weeks before that Robinson and West observed duplicates in the anti matter episode, so it should not have been such a surprise. The story seems to provide more opportunity for all characters more so than most of the episodes. Nice showcase for all of them to do things that the storylines had not permitted. Got to show a depth of character also not usually available in the time allotted. A small cut above the usual camp, but a better episode overall than how the series had been evolving.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Close but
Have loved the series both in the 2 previous movies and as part of the Marvel Universe in the other films.
With high hopes for a great end to a wonderful movie experience, left the theater a little disappointed. Tried to figure out why.
Understand that they were trying to take a darker track to fill in Rocket's back story. However, they have touched darkness before but managed to find a good balance with the humor and comradery. Seems like they tried to shoot for the chemistry that they have had throughout all the films but just fell short.
The other thing that was great in the other films was the soundtrack. This one was not that memorable. Just didn't get you zipping and playing along. The first in credit scene tried to capture it but the movie just didn't make it..
Sorry to see them go out like this. True, the family was breaking up but a group hug at the end just didn't strike the right cord for that incredible bond.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
New favorite classic
The tone of this film adds to the story and the lessons. It's a good movie to sit with your children and watch. Though somewhat dark, the darkness is an effective tool used to convey the gravity of the story and setting. And most fairy tales are pretty dark in their original tellings.
The artistry and passion that it took to bring this into fruition is nothing short of awesome. The attention to detail is incredible as well as the scale used for each of the designs was dictated by making sure that the emotion and impact of each scene was as required to make the scene effective. Do watch the short about that feat as well.
Svart krabba (2022)
Tedious and pointless
It seemed like it would never stop. It was nothing but emotional chaos seeming without end. Was nonstop tedium and emotional overload. No variety of emotions. Just full born delirium and sadness and characters stressed to the max.
East of the Mountains (2021)
Not my cup of tea
This just plodded on. Sorry but that dead horse had been sufficiently flogged at the 45 minute point. No need to go any further. And so it goes. Have I hit 150 characters yet?
Mars (2016)
PC space exploration...
So mankind's future in space exploration relies on PC elitist sponsors and PC astronaut snobs? I hope not or it will be doomed. National Geographic's vision of the world. I also echo the reviewer's lament about the constant switch between a show and present day "information".
Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)
To quote from the movie, "knocked it out of the park!"
What an amazing voyage that could have been quite cliche, quite predictable, been superficial, or comedic at the cost of meaning. It was none of these. It was the best 2 hours spent in quite sometime watching what movies should be. Simon Pegg was at his best serving as the embodiment of the story tellers vision. Truly a wonderous film.
Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate (2019)
Rather than taking shots at politician...
This became a Trump slam fest by tds ragers mahrer and suprisingly crystal among others.
