Oppenheimer (2023)
Nolan is a genius
"Oppenheimer" is a cinematic masterpiece that deserves nothing short of a perfect 10 stars. Christopher Nolan once again proves his genius, seamlessly weaving together a compelling narrative about Robert Oppenheimer, the enigmatic "Father of the atom bomb." Cilian Murphy's performance is nothing short of superb, supported by the stellar portrayals of Robert Downey Jr. And Matt Damon. Nolan skillfully navigates the complexities of Dr. Oppenheimer's character, presenting him neither as a clear hero nor a straightforward foe.
The film artfully exposes the dirtiest of politics used to sideline Oppenheimer, adding a layer of intrigue to the historical narrative. Nolan's storytelling prowess shines as he crafts a tale that is both gripping and thought-provoking. "Oppenheimer" stands out as a beacon of originality in an era dominated by poor remakes and an utter lack of creativity, delivering a fresh and engaging cinematic experience.
This film is a strong and deserved contender for Academy Awards, showcasing the perfect blend of captivating storytelling and stellar performances. It's a testament to Nolan's ability to transcend traditional biopic conventions, making "Oppenheimer" a must-watch for those who appreciate the art of filmmaking at its finest.
Maestro (2023)
Indulgent and boring
Maestro delves into the life of Bernstein, but disappoints if you are seeking a focus on his music. While Bradley Cooper's performance is commendable and Carey Mulligan is wonderful, the film falls short in balancing information and entertainment. The narrative leans heavily on Bernstein's personal life, arguably the least captivating aspect of the man. If you're part of the niche audience fascinated by the minutiae of his existence, this film may resonate. However, for those seeking a deeper exploration of Bernstein's musical genius, the movie might feel lacking. The portrayal of social gatherings as platforms for narcissistic performances may alienate some viewers, making it more suitable for those who appreciate such dynamics. Overall, "Maestro" seems to cater to a specific taste, leaving those of us seeking a more musically immersive experience somewhat unsatisfied.
L.A. Macabre (2014)
Creepy, fun, mystery
"L. A. Macabre" weaves a mesmerizing mystery against the sprawling landscapes of Los Angeles and the desert, with "The New Family" cult serving as a compelling character in its own right. The series' dedication to exploring the cult's background, inspired by the Manson family, adds a haunting dimension to the storyline. Throughout both seasons, I found myself fully engaged with the talented actors who brought the characters to life. The narrative's twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, and the atmospheric setting enhanced the overall experience. Although the absence of a Season 3 is regrettable, the anticipation for the creators' next venture is high. With its captivating storytelling and well-developed characters, "L. A. Macabre" earns a well-deserved 8-star review, providing a thrilling and immersive viewing experience.
The Winchesters (2022)
Nice start
I enjoyed the first episode and I fully expect to be changing my 8 stars to ten stars as the series progresses. I find all of the characters likable except Mary. She is not likeable but I don't think she was supposed to be all warm and fuzzy, particularly in the first episode. Latte, or whatever her name is, needs a nickname or something because what is her name? The actress who plays her is good, she needs a real name.
I was as a little distracted by Mary's car. I don't know a lot about cars but if that was supposed to be Baby, Baby was John's car - not Mary's. I know this is something new but I think the existing lore should be adhered to.
The series starts right off with (MUSIC Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World) John and Mary meeting as John gets off of the bus, returning from Viet Nam. The same evening, demons are introduced. The Men of Letters are also introduced - at least the notion of them. Both John and Mary are looking for their missing father's. There is a monster that is fought toward the end of the first episode. I think that there should have been a slower introduction from fighting a demon, telling John everything is real - which he does not question - and then going all the way to some monster that John has no real reaction to. Then I think, whatever, cool, here we go.
I enjoyed it and look forward to more.
The Black Phone (2021)
Enjoyable escapism
I liked this movie. What do you need to know about me? I do not like horror films. I do enjoy watching Ethan Hawke. So as not to be accused of over rating, I did subtract an extra star that I would have given it because all things with Ethan Hawke are watchable to me.
I do not like horror movies like Friday the 13th - blood, guts, slasher stuff. That is not what this movie is. I consider it thriller with some horror side bars. If you are a horror fan and that is what you are looking for, I don't think this is it. It's like the Stand By Me version of horror.
Ethan Hawke is a talented actor and appears to pull off this character effortlessly. There are a few scenes in the beginning, not many, where the children struggle to be believable.
There are no deep psychological explanations, no explored emotional trauma - this movie will not touch you deeply. It isn't meant to. It is meant to entertain. I think it succeeds.
The Girl from Plainville (2022)
Slow, too long
This series was too slow and boring. It seems the end goal here was to pace it so slowly that they could come up with eight episodes. They sacrificed the story with lingering, weird flashbacks- and just lingering in general- to hit a magic 8.
Elle Fanning did an excellent job of portraying Michelle Carter and Chloe Sevigny is always wonderful. Neither could salvage this snoozer and I usually enjoy docudramas.
Legacies (2018)
Lost any sense of a plot to push an agenda
The fourth season gets a one star. It was just stupid. They lost any semblance of a plot behind ridiculous character shifts - yo, for diversity. About mid third season this show needed some writers fired or not hired at all. Julie Plec is supposed to do Vampire Academy for Paramount. Hoping that doesn't get trashed as well so my niece can actually watch it and I can enjoy watching it with her.
The Deliberate Stranger (1986)
Best movie on Bundy
This movie is based on the true story of serial killer Ted Bundy. I found this movie to be the best one on the subject. The casting of Mark Harmon as Bundy perfectly captures the chilling acts by the reportedly charismatic Bundy and the haunting quality of the manhunt. I found this movie to be better than A Stranger Beside Me.
