Mea Culpa (2024)
More sloppy than steamy
The chemistry between the two leads was just not there. Rowland was okay as an attorney, but the male lead was monotone with limited acting range. No doubt he appeals to those who are attracted to men, but he's a better fit to play a gym rat rather than a painting artist.
The female nudity was not sexy, just extras who appear for a few seconds naked. In the main love making scene between to two leads, Rowland is covered with paint - as if lying in a pond of paint is somehow hot.
The mother in law and brother in law characters were obnoxious and one dimensional. However, the other supporting characters did a good job.
The story itself is ridiculous.
Will not watch again.
O Lado Bom de ser Traída (2023)
A Giovanna Lancellotti showcase
This film is a steamy thriller meant to showcase the attractive Giovanna Lancellotti. Leandro Lima and Micael provide plenty of eye candy for those attracted to males - but their primary function is to make Giovanna look good.
The supporting characters provide dialogue to help explain what's going on, often unnecessarily. I found most of these characters irritating and a nuisance.
At a young age (19), Giovanna played character in the series Gabriela who has sex reluctantly. Not so in this film. She plays a confident woman who knows what she enjoys and has no reluctance pursuing it.
I've read a couple of reviews that panned it, which it may deserve for the "thriller" aspect of the story, but it's unfortunate when a reviewer doesn't care for "steamy" yet chooses to review films that clearly are intended to be steamy. I tip my hat to Giovanna and the two guys for their steamy performances. I read that Giovanna trained long and hard to get her body in condition for the revealing sex scenes. That work clearly paid off.
The Idol (2023)
Promising beginning
After the first episode, I was on the fence. But the second episode was very well written with some great performances. No spoilers from me, but I'll definitely keep watching. Suzanna Son's character was introduced in the second episode. Suzanna was great in the critically acclaimed Red Rocket. Curious what is in store for her in this series.
Depp did a great job on the filming scene, which overall was a great scene, will all the complexities of the supporting characters.
Pay no attention to the reviewers who have bugs up their asses about the sex and nudity. Tame stuff compared to premium channel content of the past.
The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021)
Amrit Kaur has A Lister talent
It becomes immediately apparent that Amrit Kaur has great comedic talent. Hope to see her in more shows. Lots of good characters and actors playing those characters, but it's Kaur that stands out.
The first season was funny, edgy, risque, and overall great! Easy to binge. No spoilers here - all I can say is enjoy!
The second season was undistinguished - like a run of the mill sit-com. Not premium channel worthy. The show lost its punch. Additionally, the plots and subplots were not as well developed as they were in the first season.
If there is a third season, I hope the writers revert back to first season form.
Sin ti no puedo (2022)
Underwhelming
Plot-wise, gay brother and partner want a child. Estranged sister shows up. You know where this is going.
There's one climatic sex scene which isn't all that steamy. It's more PG variety.
Disappointing.
Verdades Secretas (2015)
High Quality Telenovela Production
Holed up at home during the deep, dark early days of the pandemic, I stumbled onto the first season of Verdades Secretas. At that time, full episodes were easily accessed at various websites. While I don't speak Portuguese at all, it was clear from the very first episode that this show was one of high quality - a quality beyond what you'll find from North American telenovelas or prime time soap operas. The visual production was artistic and engaging. And it was clear that the cast was top notch. So I watched all the episodes I could find and filled in my understanding by reading English written recaps and reviews.
When I read that the second season was finally a reality, I knew I had to subscribe to Globoplay and watch it. Subscribing wasn't the easiest task, however, as I couldn't figure out how to do it on my laptop. I had to use my Globoplay phone app and subscribe via Google Play (Apple store for iphone users). Some instructions were written in Portuguese, but I got through it OK. Everything works fine and I can watch on my laptop.
Season 2 (through the first 20 episodes) has been great. Whereas Season 1 was a tragedy, Season 2 is more of an erotic thriller. Characters Angel, Giovanna, and Visky return to my delight (Honestly, I couldn't get enough of Agatha Moreira's Giovanna in Season 1) -- the three most important returnees in my opinion. And newcomer characters Cristiano, Blanche, Betty, Laila, Chiara, and Lara have been great additions (and several others)! Lara just arrived in Sao Paulo in Episode 20, to escape her dysfunctional family life, with dreams of modeling. Model-in-real-life Rhay Polster, playing Chiara, has a smoking hot erotic scene in the same episode.
Season 2 is also different in its art form. In many scenes, it's similar to theatrical art. For example, the fashion shows don't have a 100 or more extras herded in to fill the seats. They use a cast ensemble like one might see in a live play. Also, the erotic scenes are artfully choreographed with great selections of music to match the mood. One example of this is an erotic scene with one of the models, Liara, who is on diet pills trying to keep her weight down. They play "Fade to Grey" to match the mood and actions of a speed freak in a love making scene.
Globoplay indicated they had ten episodes with English subtitles, but I can't yet get them to work. The Portuguese subtitles work just fine and come in handy if I need to translate.
I think Globoplay has just now figured out how much demand there would be for this production and others, if they added English subtitles and pushed for worldwide subscriptions like Netflix does.
And thank you Creator Walcyr Carrasco and Director Amora Mautner for making Season 2 happen!
UPDATE: The first 30 episodes of Season 2 all have English subtitle options!!!
Foodie Love (2019)
How can I watch this?
Can I watch this if I'm in the United States? If so, how?
Sounds like a great series! And I've adored Laia Costa in her other roles.
