Absolute blast
This is hilarious. The way did Jim Gordon is magnificent, lmao he needs companionship Batman!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Super fun ride!
Movie has great action first of all. Like john wick great. On top of that, its funny. Like deadpool funny. So basically a deadpool x john wick baby. But its way more awesome with the female cast kicking butt and Ewan killing it as black mask.
The Witcher (2019)
Stop Review Bombing
The show after watching an episode or two is fine. Overhyped a ton. Looks small budget at times. Looks high budget at times. Cavill is really good. Some stuff is boring. Plot is okay but boring. This isn't anything special. Its not the new GOT. Just another decent netflix show.
Harley Quinn (2019)
Hilarious, entertaining, Harley done right!
I didn't know if this show was going to be anything special, but its absolutely hilarious and fun. Reminds me a lot of crazy Rick and Morty season 1/2 episodes. Cuoco is great, I never thought she would be great as Harley, but she is fantastic. The best portrayal of Harley since BTAS.
As a Batman fan, the writing is great. Joker takes a backseat in this story, but thats fine. Its Harley's show. Every other character is done really well, very meta and smart use of old-school characters like Ivy, Calendar Man and etc.
Definitely a must watch for any Harley Quinn fan, Batman fan.
Watchmen: This Extraordinary Being (2019)
Now is this time to start watching.
If you thought it was a little slow to start with, between this and the last episode, now is the time to start watching. Really breathtaking episode, connecting the dots we have wanted connected. Patience pays off.
Watchmen (2019)
Forget the lies. There are no divisive politics in this TV show, it is just a majestic tale.
Let me start out by discussing the politics so far. Are people really upset that this show includes white supremacists? Come on, white supremacy exists in the real world, yet you are going to critique a TV show for handling the matter? There is nothing divisive about the politics of this show. It isn't left leaning, PC, or a snowflake show, because to state such would be arguing that white supremacy isn't in of itself dangerous and wrong. And no this does not marginalise white people or attack them. Most of the police force (good guys) is, surprise, white.
Exploring discrimination is not political, its a discussion of history.
In terms of the actual show. The cinematography is absurdly good, like some of the best ever shots on TV. The score is marvellous. At times, this feels like a more indie flick than a HBO show, and its great. The writing is great, feels a lot like Westworld. Its sophisticated and enchanting.
Acting is absurdly good. Regina King is a great lead, but Jeremy Irons and Jean Smart steal this show. They are perfectly cast and steal every scene they are in.
The only negative about this show is that it is too reliant on assuming that the audience is already familiar with Alan Moore's graphic novel. There needed to be an establishing sequence at the beginning to explain to the audience why the squids are falling from the sky, how Vietnam became an U.S. state, and, most importantly, this is set in an alternate timeline. To assume everyone knows this, is to alienate most of the audience.
Also, to anyone saying this is too slow, what did you expect? There isn't five seasons of build up and this takes place after the events of the graphic novel. Don't expect anything until the later parts of the season when they can build off of the foundation they lay in the first half of the season - you know like most TV shows. Otherwise just wait until Dec. 15 and binge the show.
The End is Nigh.
Batwoman (2019)
Thank god they can reference Bruce/Batman.
There's some interesting set up, but where this show fails is that every mention of Batman/Bruce is more interesting as a viewer than the actual show.
Action is subpar. Acting isn't great. Ruby does okay, but it's too edgy and trying to be like Bruce. Script is not great. Too much time is spent on the relationship between Kate and Sophie, and dear god it's high school cringe level bad. There isn't much development on the relationship and just seems misplaced. They should have developed it over a couple of episodes.
Everything about this is trying way too hard to be like Batman. They even have Kate mysteriously disappear during conservations ala the dark Knight. But it doesn't work. I wish the show was it's own thing rather than a bad Batman rip off.
They should have focused on doing it's own thing. You shouldn't try to replicate The Dark Knight when you don't have the Nolans. Again there is interesting stuff but there is no set up and the writers just ignore the details.
I give it a 5 because and only because they freely reference Batman and Bruce.
High Life (2018)
Incredible film, awful ending.
This movie is not for everyone. It is slooow. The title hits 8 mins in but it feels like 30 mins in. But once you adjust, the film takes off.
The film actively explores issues of sexual desires, alienation, reproduction, and human relations. Denis is uncompromising in creating a film that is a difficult but beautiful watch. In the end, it becomes a really emotional watch despite the messed up content as you near the end.
What drives this movie, and saves it at times, is Pattinson's quietly intense performance. Pattinson barely has lines, which makes it much more impressive that he can drive the film. He has an intensity yet comfort to him that is majestically illustrated when he interacts with his baby.
But the ending is awful. Denis leaves it too ambiguous and makes me question her ability to finish the film. I would have liked a conclusion that resolves the narrative in a clear manner. Perhaps the ambiguity stays true to the entire narrative, but it just undermines the momentum the film makes in the last 30 minutes.
Overall, a good film and cool watch.
Joker (2019)
Best in Venice. Best CBM of all time? Perhaps.
Joker (2019) is ambitious, tragic, meritorious, a dark comedy, exhilarating, and a masterpiece in cinematic storytelling. Director Todd Phillips, after several questions over his ability to direct a praiseworthy Joker film, delivers a classic movie that will be forever enshrined in the memories of those fortunate enough to experience it. Phillips deconstructs the superhero genre and turns it on its head, forming a film that feels and IS an artful indie film rather than a prototypical A to B superhero movie. Every scene in the film has purpose for Phillips. There is a love for the story being told and a direct care in the manner it is portrayed. And for this Phillips should be praised. He navigates the complexities around the character of the Joker, introducing a fresh take while also attempting to pay homage to movies such as Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. Yet, the movie never falters, not even for a second. It moves through each scene not just feeling new, but breathtaking beautiful that will have you applauding before the credits even roll.
Likewise, the details in this film are remarkable, as Phillips not only has one listen to the film, but we actively live in it. We can feel the nasty, garbage-filled streets of Gotham often represented through careful and strategic use of symbolism. But of course, while the movie itself is remarkable, it needs an anchor - the great Joaquin Phoenix.
Phoenix delivers the most jaw-dropping performance in a film of the 2000s, and perhaps one of the greatest and most memorable performances of all-time. While the character already complex, Phoenix dives so much into the role that you can hardly recognise him. He is at times funny, delicate, innocent, sometimes he is tragic, heartbreaking, and at times he is the dangerous, horrifying, and unpredictable. Through his complex play on the ranging emotions of one Arthur Fleck, Phoenix becomes the epitome of the Joker.
So is this the best comic book movie of all time? For most moviegoers that will be the question. And this film transcends the genre in a manner that has not been done since 2008. Likewise, while the Joker movie is more of a tragedy or even comedy than it is a superhero movie (imagine an indie film with DC characters), with the inclusion of superheros, or supervillains in this case, it will always be a superhero movie.
So where does it stand amongst other CBMs? It is top 2, battling with another film that featured the Joker, The Dark Knight.
