Poor Things (2023)
My new spirit movie
I've forgotten what it was like to be in awe of a film. Poor Things was everything I love in a story: a plucky female protagonist-and one that I could relate to deeply though my exploits have hardly led me to experience what Bella Baxter has-beautiful settings and even more beautiful clothes, reflections on life and existence, blood and boldness, the spirit of adventure, even sadness and suffering. Bella's thirst to go outside and discover the world, her desire to be fully in charge of her own destiny, her endearing naïveté, her overindulgence and drive for satisfaction, her crying over dead babies-I could go on. Everything about her and her journey was so relatable. The fantastical world of Poor Things was also a sight to behold. I remember thinking at the beginning of the movie, "oh what a beautiful house. I wish I could see it in color." I love how the movie allows you to see the events unfolding as if through Bella's lens where it started in black and white and then turned into a world full of vibrant, rich color: blue skies, sex, oysters and tarts! What an adventure!
Yes, God, Yes (2017)
Absolutely underrated
This film is TOO GOOD for that 6.3 rating. Natalia Dyer's performance is amazing. She was innocent, sweet, a little naughty and hilarious all at the same time. That bar scene was a revelation for someone like me who was also once Catholic and raised with the austerity of it all. The depiction of that life is pretty realistic. This film speaks to me in so many ways; because I was once a young girl who felt shame about my sexuality, because I know the hypocrisy of the Catholic church, because everyone has their secrets, because it hurts to spread lies and be lied about. This film deserves a lot more than it's been given credit for.
