The Killing of Two Lovers (2020)
Captivating
Beautifully performed and realized examination of a man desperate to repair a failing marriage. Full of tension and honest emotion. True cinema. It is a slow burn, but for me that just allowed me to better understand the characters and appreciate the tone. Slow burn, but certainly not boring. Had me in tears by the climax.
Alone (2020)
Great simple thriller
Mostly believable storyline, well, performed and full of tension. One of the movies key strengths is it is grounded in reality and has characters with some depth. Best thriller I've seen in some time. If I was to be critical of the film I suppose it could have dug a little deeper thematically... still, there is definitely room in this world for simple movies that don't feel the need to make some profound statement at the expensive of entertainment.
If you liked the movie Hounds of Love give this a go! Or the other way around if you've not seen the former.
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
Don't make 'Em like this anymore
Full of truth, heartbreak and sublime filmmaking. Wonderful performances and a story that realistically portrays a truly difficult part of the human condition. Perhaps a little melodramatic in places but overall a diamond in the rough - a movie deserving of the big screen.
Earthquake Bird (2019)
Very pleasantly surprised
Given the reviews I put off watching this but I'm so glad I finally got around to it. Stunning performances, moody pictures, atmospheric score all add up to what is ultimately a tense, satisfying, psychological thriller. It's a slower burn but is so well handled I was riveted from the opening frame. I long for more movies like this.
Rattlesnake (2019)
Fun, fast great performances
It's a fun ride, that's well done with great performances. Perfect Friday night movie IMO. An easy watch that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I loved it.
The Nightingale (2018)
The hype
Lots of movies have lots of hype and 99% of the time they don't live up to it. The Nightingale is the exception. Performances are Stella, the direction on point... seriously this movie has little to criticize. It's confronting in places but also poetic in its realization. Not for the faint hearted, but for anyone interested in the brutal foundation of Australia this a must watch.
The Trump Prophecy (2018)
May God have mercy on all involved's souls!
This film is a disgrace. No different to the vile propaganda used by Nazis in the Second World War. How the filmmakers can use Christianity to paint an adulterous, hate mongering, dishonest, narcissist as some kind of prophet is truly an insult to all humanity. Especially Christians.
If you're so morally corrupt you feel the need to make this kind of garbage, at least do it well. The acting is comparable to that in The Room, the writing comparable to that of a third grader (who might be excused for believing something as ridiculous as the message peddled in this movie), and the direction about as pedestrian as I've seen... and I've seen Birdemic!
If this movie were not so toxic, I may have found it 'so bad, it's good.' Sadly, the film has nothing going for it. NOTHING. I couldn't even close my eyes and escape in the musical score because it was about as subtle as a T-Rex in a cat show.
I only sympathize with the poor actors. As we all know work doesn't always come easy to them. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they took this job as a way of staying off welfare... though personally, I'd sooner volunteer my body for medical tests than tarnish my reputation by being associated with this evil atrocity.
May god have mercy on all involved's souls!
Thelma (2017)
Refreshing
In a world full of superhero movies and remakes of remakes, Thelma is a breath of fresh air. Beautiful performances, visuals and screenplay all enhanced by a gorgeous, emotive soundtrack.
Thelma is proof a genre film can be about more than jump scares and body count. Dealing with themes of identity and religious oppression it's a haunting tale that won't leave this audience members mind for some time.
Burning Man (2011)
Unexpected masterpiece
I had no idea what I was getting into with this film. An honest, moving, superbly petfirmed story about a love lost. One of only a few films ever to remind me how important those little moments we share with others are.
Fahrenheit 11/9 (2018)
A truly scary film
I do not flipedy give out tens, but this one deserves each one of them. It moved me to tears, shook me to the bone and even at times made me laugh. This is not a movie damning Republicans or Democrats, but an examination of the depth of corruption and greed at the heart of democracy in the most powerful nation on Earth. The filmmaking is sublime and Moore does very well in keeping his arguments balanced, albeit his left leaning is never in question.
As an Australian, I can say the vast majority of us down under love the USA but believe right now, America deserves better. I believed that before I saw this film, now I am beyond certain of it.
This film is important. A must see.
The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies (2014)
A hidden gem
A wonderful surprise find, with beautiful performances. Thanks Netflix!
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Fun ride
A few too many predictable and coincidental moments, but it you look at it as a fun popcorn movie it delivers. For the most part the performances were good and the world felt true to the universe. More so than The Last Jedi did.
Whiteley (2017)
Truly original
At truly artist piece about a truly groundbreaking artist. This is a one of a kind.
Gemini (2017)
It's solid
Great performances, engaging story, slick style helmed by a director who clearly knows what they are doing. The score is also fantastic. Not a film that's going to change the world, but I was damn glad I stumbled upon this on a plane.
Extinction (2018)
So confused
All these bad reviews?? Maybe I'm a fool but I thought it was a really compadant fun film. Spoiler alert but the wooden approach of the beginning seemed justified by the twist! Loved it! Clever, fun, and full of surprises.
