House of Gucci (2021)
What movie did Jared Leto think he was in?
I heard all the hubbub about Gaga's accent, but she was consistent throughout and honestly did a great job with what she had, I was surprised by her. Driver was great, though he did slip in his accent a few noticeable times and of course Pacino is incredible. Leto on the other hand seemed to think it was smart to take on some Jokeresque tendencies throughout the film, I don't know what the hell he was trying to do. He's supposed to play an emotional idiot, but he's so overly dramatic that the audience in my theater kept laughing at him at moments where he was definitely not supposed to be funny. He completely took me out of the movie and I just saw Jared Leto in a fat suit around a bunch of Gucci's.
The pacing is a bit off and there are emotional bits that don't play well because of it. In the end, Maurizio is much more ruthless than he ever was throughout the film, but there isn't enough ramping for it to feel realistic to the rest of the film's characterization of him. It's also too fast paced in some areas and too slow in others, characters seem to change how they feel very quickly and without cause and it feels like there are pieces missing. It's an interesting story that they probably had to leave a lot out of. This probably could have been a better tv series than movie to be able to tell it all without cutting so much.
Harley Quinn (2019)
DC made their own Venture Bros
If you're a fan of Venture Bros, itself a parody of superhero and adventure comics, then you will like this show. It's the DC characters, but made into its own adult swim cartoons and I'm a big fan. I'm glad they can take their own IP and make some jokes and have some fun, but there is a lot of heart to the characters too. Gordon is an overworked alcoholic who is slowly going insane, but can be brought back by his daughter's love. Harley is able to realize she was in an abusive relationship with the help of her friends. It's funny and super violent, but has a surprisingly good storyline throughout. I'm excited for next season.
A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
My god this is terrible dialogue
I cannot get over how bad the dialogue in this film is, these are supposedly second year college students and they speak like they are 87. Listen, I'm a film nerd, I get their references, and I'm normally a fan of Allen films, but it is incredibly unrealistic and just plain poor choices. I hate the direction for the main two characters, I hate that they are acting as if they are Diane Keaton and Woody in one of their 70's films. Not that we don't see that in every Allen film, but it never took me out of the movie like it did here. It was just bad writing and highly derivative of better, earlier work. And what a half-assed plot. I've watched art films that purposefully do not have a plot that had more direction than the first half of this cheese fest. I wonder if Liev Schreiber's character was a fill in for Woody looking at his latest film and hating it. I couldn't get through to the end, so I can't tell you if it gets better, but I can tell you the first half is bad.
The Mist (2007)
horrible in every sense of the term
Am I going mad here? I have read some of the other comments where this movie is in fact praised as one of the greats. How is that even possible? I saw this movie in theaters and in fact walked out for about 10 minutes because I couldn't stand to see anymore. It was painful to watch and not in the way a horror movie should. Unfortunately I did go back in to watch the most predictable ending I have ever seen. My friends and I in fact said what was going to happen minutes before it came upon screen. (although I do have to say well done on the hopelessness of it.) I know it wasn't just us because the rest of the theater was laughing just as hard as we were in how horrible the movie was. It was boring, predictable, and utterly annoying to watch as the religious shrew kept screeching about judgment day. Although I do have to say the acting was well done. Marcia Gay Harden portrays the bible loving beast so well that everyone literally was shouting for her to get killed. That always shows a great performance. Other than the performances of already great actors, the plot was boring and uninspired and the CGI is laughable. Sorry to ruin it for the fans out there, but even though I haven't read the book, I already know the book was better.
