The Whale (2022)
He's Done One Thing Right
Brendan Fraser truly is outstanding.
I had little to no expectations going into this film outside of the general Brendans going to look insanely different! But what I didn't expect to find was such a heartbreaking story about love, and loss.
Fraser absolutely deserves that Oscar for this role, the stress and emotion he delivers is what grounds this film so well, but he didn't do it alone.
Chau, Sink and Simpkins really round out the story, Chau being his last real life line and friend, whilst Simpkins plays a holy man bent on saving him. Sinks role stands out from the other two as she plays the horrendous and arguably broken daughter, who might not just be a lost cause yet?
The Whale had me invest in so much in so little time, and ultimately exceeded what I could've expected.
Mulan (2020)
Dishonour to Us All
This film had incredible potential, adapting a hit Disney classic and bringing some live action flare and grit but alas it is but a poor reflection.
The trailers for this one had me in high hopes of what was to come, and if not for my own benefit being unable to see this on the big screen seems like a blessing...
I've never been too bothered if an adaptation changes things here or there, that's the whole point of them but this one went a step further, removing all original songs but artistically sneaking their melodies into the soundtrack, and out right removing all animal sidekicks for some sense of realism?
Mulan manages to miss many marks that it's unclear where its wrong doings are at their worst, for me personally it's her "chi" but even removing that wouldn't make this a film worth fighting for.
The Flash (2023)
Flash, Ah-Ah!
It amazes me to say but The Flash is easily top 5 of the DCEU!
Andy Muschietti delivers fun and engaging story filled with action, heart and laughs, and for the first time truly the DC films feel connected and bigger. This is why it's a real shame this movie comes out amongst a studio shift but I digress.
Keaton is back! And new comer Sasha Calle joins the team, both having standout roles. We get to see Keaton as an aged up Batman from his Burton days yet still a prominent action hero, whilst Calle dawns her cape for the first time as Supergirl in lieu of Superman.
Yet despite all of this multiversal fun, Ezra Millers roles as Barry Allen/s is the core of this film and whilst I've never been attached to their casting they truly cemented themselves in the role with this film.
Whilst it's tempting to skip this one as the cinematic universe faces a ominous reset, any DC fan new or old should definitely check this one out.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
The Ultimate Spider-Man
Across the Spider-Verse easily joins the hall of fame for amazing sequels. Whilst the last film doesn't quite leave the door wide open for a grand adventure sequel, AtSV manages to bridge together a multiversal epic!
From "villain of the week", to the introduction of Spider-Society, this movie delivers on everything with sensational plot, action, heart and cameos! And none of it takes away from itself.
The movie opening on Spider-Gwens world/origin to catch the viewer up to speed was spectacular. As the story unfolds each new Spider is just as unique as the last, with new comers Pavitr and Hobie being exceptional standouts.
This title easily could've gone for another hour with no complaints but the cliffhanger it ends on will be well worth the wait!
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Wild Uncharted Remakes
With the tide of Disney remakes we've received this could've been just another ship wreck, thankfully The Little Mermaid delivers the next best entry since Jungle Book!
Adapting on and yet still being largely faithful to the Disney classic, Little Mermaid brings a great deal of charm and fun to the big screen.
Halle Baileys singing background makes her a stand out amongst her contemporary live action Princesses. As for her co-stars; Hauer-King and McCarthy, both also deliver on bringing to life their respective characters, McCarthy especially delivering a balanced performance for her Ursula.
Uncharted (2022)
Unexpected
Everything from it's several directorial drop outs to casting choices lead me to think I would hate this adaptation, and whilst I still have my issues with the differences between what this film has set up for the characters and what the games did, it would be a lie to say I didn't enjoy the show.
Uncharted easily broke my expectations and gave me enough to enjoy it, and whilst I feel this easily could've just been a new IP rather than an adaptation, I welcome the potential for a sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Gold Rings
The updated CG definitely saved the film, but it stood out besides that, the script wasn't particularly cheesy and the human characters didn't derail the core Sonic story, Jim Carrey is back in his prime playing Robotnik and with how his character is left and the mid-credit scene I surpringly cannot wait for a Sequal!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Harley Quinn: The Movie
This movie gives promise of a classic DC team up but realistically is focused on its subtitle (Harley Quinn), although this is a small step up from Suicide Squad it follows it's footsteps in poor pacing and overuse of music. The characters adapted in this movie are poorly portrayed and sadly wasted/ruined for the greater DC universe, this said Robbie continues to shine and new comers Winstead & Smollett-Bell are well casted as their respect BoP members.
The Witcher (2019)
Toss A Coin To Your Netflix
With no previous experience of Witcher content this show was an amazing surprise! A wondrous world filled with such interesting lore and a brilliant story, this story is really only just starting and I cannot wait for season 2.
Doom Patrol (2019)
HOLY ****!
Doom Patrol is a hidden gem in DC Comics adaptions/Television sadly hidden away on DCUniverse. DP is a fantastic show with plenty of heart and gripping characters that cannot help but be binged.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
The Last Skywalker?
Best of the trilogy. After setting the trilogy up and handing it off for it to... bump, J.J. comes back and does the best he can to not only give us a story but to wrap it up, with grand reveals and action as well as a lot of fan service. TROS truley rises to end this series.
The Mandalorian (2019)
This Is The Way
A return to classic Star Wars fashion whilst expanding the ever growing universe, setting the bar for future Disney+ content both within the Star Wars universe and the platforms content in general.
Aladdin (2019)
One Wish Or Two Or Three?
My first wish is for a different director, many scenes took me away from the magic of the film and felt poorly planned/executed.
My second wish is for a recasting of Jafar, Marwan Kenzari was such a poor choice for the role; from his youth & overall look to his performance this just wasn't the role for him, I was left wanting something else.
And my final wish is that they didn't over shadow the original romance with the very weird and uncalled for Genie romance..
Besides my wishes this adaptation did bring to life some stunning sets/visuals as well as holding it's own performance wise to the original music. Most of the acting and story was great but with Marwan as Jafar and Genies new romance this film sadly took a carpet ride for the worst.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
What If...? Tarantino Addition
Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood is a beautifully crafted love letter to 60's Hollywood, Quentin delivers more engaging characters & moments to the cinema screen topped off by his gory re-imaging of what happened that tragic night in Hollywood.
Cinderella (2015)
Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Do!
Despite removing original elements such as the (character of the) mice & songs, Cinderella manages to ground itself as a thoroughly enjoyable remake. Adding a whole new segment of her early life and multiple scenes of the Prince with his Captain (best friend), and other alternations this remake also features a fantastic cast that help elevate the original material.
The Jungle Book (2016)
Oh, The Remake VIP
Jungle Book stands out as a fantastic remake for its beautiful CGI, added depth & usage of the original material. It truely sets the bar for what remakes could and (inarguably) should be!
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
It's Baroque
Emma Watsons casting was one of the poorest choices next to the CGI ones. The choices made to bring the animated characters to life stained this movie, as did the musical performances, aside from some brief new story elements & Josh Gads LeFou, this remake missed the mark.
Dumbo (2019)
Cast Your Doubts Aside
Disney proves it can reinvent its classic works. Unlike previous remakes Dumbo adds characters & new plot elements that expand a beloved classic into a new and more engaging story.
The Lion King (2019)
Be Prepared
Although it features stunning CGI, this Disney remake has expressionless characters and poor vocal pairings for its greatest tracks. It also offers little to no new scenes or depth that the other remakes had delivered, and is merely a shoddy shot by shot remake.
