Dopo mezzanotte (2004)
Brilliant and slightly clever
The 2004 new movie by one of the most intriguing Italian directors. Despite of a low budget and a not-famous cast (except for the narrating voice), this movie is purely entertaining and involving: fascinating sequences inside the Turin's wonderful Mole, actual venue of the most important Italian cinematographic museum. Not-so-profound characters and dialogs, and sometimes a bit of inaccuracy in playing, but a sincere view in the struggle for love, solitude and boredom. Very nice editing with sequences of early cinema movie clips, especially by Buster Keaton.
Genesis: In Concert (1977)
A document of the Genesis post-Gabriel progressive-era
Nice movie (and still very rare to find) shot during the Trick of the Tail tour in 1976. Great Genesis line-up, without Peter Gabriel for the first time but with Bill Bruford (of Yes and King Crimson) on drums and percussion.
The most important Genesis feature was the theatrical approach carried on in the early 70's by Peter Gabriel costumes and acting. Here it's the music itself, together with a massive light show, to involve the audience. Phil Collins sings quite well, but he'll be able to find a more personal style later on. Impressive rhythm section, with Rutherford (with a legendary double-neck guitar) and Bruford playing complex songs with precision and fantasy. Steve Hackett on guitar has a unique brilliance and elegance.
But a video for fans only: some of the songs are included only in sections (Supper's Ready and Cinema Show) and overdubbed with images that have very little to do with the music. The tracking list is not in the actual order of the concert, and the concerts of that period were also very longer, so this is just a short selection of the songs performed.
Very good stuff, but not the best for Genesis fans...
Jeff Buckley: Live in Chicago (2000)
Jeff at his best!
Heart moving gig by Jeff and his band during the Grace tour.
Jeff voice is incredibly brilliant with stunning versions of Mojo Pin, Dream Brother and Grace. The famous cover of Hallelujah is sung "a cappella" for few lines as encore of the concert. Humor and feeling for the entire length of this show, with Jeff getting tired of the audience's request for 70's hits («Stairway to Free Bird»!!!). I recommend the DVD version because the 5.1 encoding is very warm and clear and the extra features are very good, most of all that TV live show with a great unplugged version of So Real. I think that this video is the best Jeff Buckley live album ever released.
Acciaio (1933)
Stunning location in the actual "Terni" steel plant
Inspired by a Luigi Pirandello novel, who later disagreed with the definitive screenplay, this simple plot develops in the fascinating hellish atmospheres of the big Terni factories. Long sequences of incandescent iron bars coming out from the blast furnace, together with music/noise rhythms make this film close to the futurist style. Some of the actors were actual workers of the factory. A restored edition was released in 1997 by the Istituto Luce, but only in VHS.
Tre addii (1999)
Boring TV movie
This was the first of the two mini-series filmed in Terni by Mario Caiano. As for "L'amore oltre la vita" I think that it would be good only for fans of non-profound or complex movies, as it is, actually, quite boring and obvious. I played a little role in it, I met of course most of the cast and crew, all nice guys. Take a look at the location, Terni is a nice Italian city. One curiosity: in the sequence with a close up of a pair of gloves, the actor wearing them is actually the director: a sort of hands-cameo for him...
