A stupidly violent adaptation of the original novel
11 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What is left from Remarque's anti-work novel? Some character names, a basic plot at most, but even the title makes no sense in the movie (Remarque's main character dies not during heavy fights at the last minute, but a few days earlier in a routine patrol, on day where nothing happens on the western front). Berger uses the title to make one more ultra-violent war movie with no time for character development. Opposing as the movie (not the book) does the upper class living in luxury while negociating the German surrender and the troops is extremely primitive. Acting and music are not much better than the story as developped by Mr Berger: typical Netflix aesthetics. Read the book.

A terrible film with some very good acting
26 April 2022
Lino Ventura and Michel Bouquet are wonderful, some others among the supporting characters too, but Hossein's directing style is so terribly outdated and grandiloquent (and why on earth is it raining so much throughout the movie?). The use of the music is so tasteless, see the barricade scene.
