The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
Why it was killed
I loved it too and stil watch the re-runv on Roku. I think what killed it was the thread about the wife, who when she got pregnant had miscarriages because the fetus time traveled out of her womb. She lost at least five fetuses. Think about that; where they went and how they died. Cripes, that is a bit much.
Also it bothered me that he had no "stop" on his traveling. I think he should have had a cause for the travel that he could try to avoid. Something very common and hard to avoid but he could possibly, for a while, in the right environment.
The writing and acting were excellent, as was the direction. I liked the comedy. The meeting in the library was very good. The introduction of a second, third a fourth traveler at different ages means that even when he died at 43 the younger ones should still be traveling. Yet we didn't see that. Maybe in a new season, if it ever happens.
The Last of Us (2023)
Epi 3_Home Run
It gets better and better does'nt it? Episode three was incredible. So much like a full length movie it should be nominated for an Oscar. I guess I am not really a reviewer but an enjoyer of good stuff and this has my attention. The whole concept of fungi not being able to live in the human body because of the temperature is based on fact and the fact is with temps rising on Earth the day may come when we have tp protect ourselves from invasive fungicide. I don't think we will have to worry about zombies, but you never know, do you? Looking for to episode 4 and beyond into the world of the fungi feed. After a billion years of fungi history how does it feel for them to have this new source brain power for hosting and taking over. Are we going to find out how they feel about the human condition, and can we talk them into backing off?
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Each viewing is better
Three and half times watched, and I find more to like in each viewing. The true test of good acting is when you don't think of someone as acting but as the character they play in the film. This happens to me once in a while. "Oh wait....he is acting, he is an actor." In the scene where Dominic gets rejected by Siobhan. The performance by Barry Keoghan is so good, so heartbreaking, He shows so many emotions with his facial expressions, his movements, those sad, searching eyes, the words, the look back as he walks away is crushing. For that scene alone you should never miss this movie. Also, Colin is spot on with his "dim" and "dull" character, since Colin is Irish, he has probably known people just like his character.
It took me a while to figure who the why of this story. Why would Colm do such a thing, and what was his point? It was for selfish reasons. He wanted to be famous for something after he dies so once he finished his song, he wanted to make sure it became famous by making it his one and only composition and then attaching an unforgettable fact that he cut his fretting fingers off on finishing it.
I recognized beautiful Keem Beach on Achill Island in West County Mayo, Ireland as the location of Colm's thatched home. I spent a beautiful sunny afternoon there about 10 years ago. Not many tourists make it out there, but it's worth the trip.
Away (2020)
Amatuers in Space
It's like the crew did not prepare for anything. The stupid cable thing on the solar array and no tether long enough. Duh. The water situation with a bad pump should be redundant three times deep. And the solution, very unsatisfying and odd. The whining, blubbering tears accompanying every scene and the lame calls home. Cripes! The lack of discipline that started even before the launch. Making a big deal of space walks? Ugh. Stunk. I was hoping they would miss Mars and dive into the Sun.
Mom (2013)
The DNA episode
My favorite is the episode when Mom gets a DNA kit for her birthday and after getting the results she finds out her father is still alive and not the guy she thought was her father. Her real father is played by John Lithgow and their meeting is epic. When it happens. this episode, and the three others that go with it have not been written yet, but can you imagine the back and forth between Allison Janney and John Lithgow!?
La La Land (2016)
Not equal talents
She was not particular about what roles she could get. She did not refuse any roles, she just was not chosen for any. He never left his piano. I think he was the real talent. He chose not to play for money when he always could have. She quit completely and he saved her. He never quit the piano, but he did "settle" for some money at one point. How talented was she? Did her future husband get her that first job? Remember her barista days when the big star came in for coffee? How she admired her appearance? It was not her talent that was featured, just the sunglasses, the clothes, the walk, the limo, the big tip... was that what she wanted? Anyway it wasn't a equal comparison of careers. I loved the ending where the point was that they had to go their separate ways or he would have spent all his time nurturing her, not his jazz. they both got their dreams, but not each other. It reminds me of A Star is Born, but without the booze and the unhappy ending.... the Disney version.
Down from the Mountain (2000)
Pure Gold
I wonder if the reviewers are still around who wrote of this concert in 2000, before 9/11, and since that tragic event if their reviews still stand. I suspect they will look at this fine effort in a different light now, and love it more. It's like looking back at innocent children before bad things happened. Although the film, Oh Brother, Where are Thou, is a favorite of mine I missed this special and didn't discover it until Netflix instant downloads became available. I have been watching it three or four times a week since I discovered it. I was shocked to find out it was done in 2000, 11 years ago. I love hearing the family's, The Cox's, the White's and of course the little Pesall sisters, who I imagine have grown and look a lot different now. I haven't Googled any of the talent in this concert because I was afraid of what I might find. Alison Krauss and Emmy Lou Harris are perfect. The Fairfield Four opened the show and Ralph Stanley closes it but the between part has purest blues and blue grass I have ever heard. That Welch/Rawlings are quit the pair. I will probably spoil this by watching it too many times but I just can't stop.
