You either love it or you just don't get it
18 February 2023
So, I went into this film completely blind. The marketing posters seemed interesting so I gave it a chance. After finishing the film I came to IMDB to get more info on it and was not surprised to see who was at the helm. If you are a fan of his father or David Lynch there will be much for you to sink your teeth into. He definitely has his father's penchant for finding ways to make grotesque images ridiculously sensual and alluring. Great acting all around, wonderful story with in depth character development and just beautiful imagery. Mia Goth is just absolutely breathtaking and definitely steals the camera every second she is on screen. I can't say too much without giving plot points away. I will say that I will be strongly recommending this to everyone I know which doesn't happen frequently. If you dig the more creepy, violent, arousing and hallucinogenic side of cinema do yourself a favor and give this a watch. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on your best of list.

Not what I expected but better
10 July 2021
Watched randomly as it was streaming on the Arrow app. Had no idea what I was watching and just put it on to fall asleep to. Instead I ended up riveted to the screen. The chemistry between the 2 lead actors was amazing, especially when I learned that the dialogue was entirely improvised by the actors themselves. The film was shot on an iPhone which also surprised me as it looked quite polished and professional. The ending was somewhat abrupt and left me wanting more but all in all I was amazed at what they were able to accomplish with so little. The female lead is definitely someone I hope to see in more roles.

Extremely Pleased
4 March 2021
Seeing as I am a huge fan of his father's work, and the fact that I recieved 2 recommendations from individuals who I trust their opinions greatly, I decided to finally sit down and watch this film. I am extremely glad that I did. I read a bunch of the reviews on here and people seem torn in a lot of directions as far as what happened and what should be interpreted as what in this movie and none of them are exactly like my take on the story. I simply love films that have the ability to do this. I feel a lot of similarity between this film and David Lynch's Daughter's film Surveilance. Both offspring seemed to have been able to capture part of the essence of what make their parent's films so wonderful while still putting their own little twist of flavor in there. I cant wait to see what both of them do next but I am extremely relieved that someone is carrying on the torch for these types of cerebraly challenging films.

It feels weird to agree with the critics for a change
30 July 2020
Normally I find myself siding more with film watchers then with film critics but this one definitely went against the norm for me. So many of the reviews posted here seem like the reviewer must have been watching a different film from the one I viewed. It is definitely a slow burn kind of movie but I found it to be quite gripping. The last 1/4 of the film had my adrenaline pumping and I found myself on the edge of my seat, literally. The atmosphere and cinematography were absolutely phenomenal and the performances from all actors involved were top notch. I have had the experience of caring for a loved one that suffered from dementia/alzheimers and this film depicted many aspects of that experience to a t. I dont want to give anything away but if you are a fan of atmospheric horror with a deeper meaning then do yourself a favor and invest the time to watch this. I dont think you will be disappointed, I know I wasn't.

If this is your kind of thing you will love it
30 March 2020
I know this film doesnt have the highest rating. To be honest I completely understand why. If this isnt your kind of thing you will hate it, no doubt. If quirky, over the top gore that just seems to keep pushing the limits further and further is your thing though you will love this. Plot is just enough to give the creators the excuse to nasueat the audience over and over. Brilliant practical effects, passable acting and infectious humor. I loved it.

Effective and well done slow-burn horror film.
29 February 2020
First off, horror has many forms. There is the chainsaw wielding, bash your head in variety, the slow moving, creeping dread kind, and everything in between. This film definitely falls more towards the creeping dread side of the spectrum. I went into this with no knowledge of the film or seeing any reviews which I would suggest is how most people approach it. Acting was well done, cinematography was expertly executed and the story line was engaging if not entirely ground breaking. If you like your films with a little bit of weirdness then I think I you will walk away from this pleasantly surprised. Definitely worth the watch for me.

A masterpiece
27 January 2020
I am amazed but at the same time not surprised by the large amount of low scores for this film. If you need to have things spoon fed to you plot wise while having the attention span of a goldfish then please skip seeing this. On the other hand if you can recognize beauty in the grotesque and can feel tension without having to see a car chase every 5 minutes then please do yourself a favor and invest the time to watch this with an open mind. I will not provide any spoilers as I feel that would be bordering on sinful for a film of this calibre. Absolutely breathtaking visually and emotionally. This director is single handedly restoring my respect for American filmmakers.

Better then expected
4 January 2020
I wasnt expecting much from this film going in. The premise has been done before recently and most of the other films of the same ilk were rather disappointing. That being said I feel like this had some redeeming qualities. Good atmosphere, good jump scares and some pretty impressive practical effects. No CGI which is a huge plus for me. Is it groundbreaking cinema that will Haunt you for years? No. But it is a good popcorn horror flick that will keep you entertained throughout with more then one nasty kill that will have you cheering out loud.

I should have known going in...
24 October 2019
I blame myself. I should have known going in to this that it was going to be dreadful, I guess I just didn't realize HOW dreadful it would be. If you hate Black Metal there is a good chance that you will love this movie. On the other hand if you are a fan of the genre, as I consider myself to be, you will walk away angry. Insulting the dead is always a questionable move so maybe that's what the film maker was going for with his depiction of Euronymous. It also seemed to simultaneously praise Varg while also making him out to be a poser. This hodgepodge of buddy comedy along with extremely awkward romantic undertones is a complete waste of time. If you are looking for any kind of historical accuracy look elsewhere as there are tons of documentaries that will give you a much better account of the events covered in this film. Shameful, insulting and poorly executed in every way. I should have known...

Not as bad as people are making it out to be
5 October 2019
So, this is not by any means a ground breaking piece of cinema. That being said I found it to be rather enjoyable. I put it on at 11:30 at night thinking it would be something to fall asleep to. Let's face it, most unknown films you find randomly scrolling through netflix usually are good for a snooze and that's about it. I ended up engrossed in the film and watched it all the way to the end feeling rather involved in the story. I see a lot of people complaining about how the characters made bad decisions. This is a horror film people, horror wouldn't exist if it weren't for people making bad decisions. If characters did the smart thing in any horror film it would be about 5 minutes long. Secondly the film's ending is quite easily understood ad long as you dont need your plots soon fed to you. Solid acting, good atmosphere and an amusing if not horribly original plot. You could definitely find worse things to watch.
