It's Citizen Kane Compared to The Originals, Not Great Next to Anything Else
This movie did actually have a compelling opening. When you compare this to the original film, there is actual character development, and some genuine scares. There is an actual plot, the runtime is not spent stalling, and not all the characters have empty heads.
However, once you compare it to the films of today, there really is not much here that gives it an edge. The dialogue comes with some incredibly awkward and already outdated race jokes. The characters may not be the disposable bodies they were before, but the cast still feels like an all star gathering of horror stereotypes. They also chose to stick with the tradition of having an implausible ending.
Overall, this was much better than the originals, but what this film mainly does is maintain that this is a franchise that is best left alone.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Lights Out (2020)
The Dance
Just watch the part with the dance. That may have been the best part of the season.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
They Did It?
This movie began the way I was worried it would, with a plot that horribly transitions from the previous film and is full of cliche elements we've seen a million times before. It then proceeded to move into an hour-and-a-half cat-and-mouse chase that repeated the same predictable chase sequence three times.
However, once you clear that portion, the second half of the the film is the epic space battle we've been hoping for. We get a genuinely surprising final sequence that is very reminiscent of Episode VI. We also get a very cleverly incorporated Carrie Fisher and some of John Williams' best work.
Overall, the movie starts out as something of a disappointment, but it turns into a very impressive reminder of why we love Star Wars. The plot may be formulaic, and it is definitely the weakest of the sequel trilogy, but everyone has something to enjoy in this film. Because of that, everyone should at least give this film a chance.
Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards (2016)
The Greatest Television Episode Of All Time
This episode is a masterpiece. It is the only TV episode I would label as perfect. It is my favorite of the Game of Thrones battles, and it is easily the best filmed. It's weird to call a battle sequence beautiful, but this one is. The stunning shot of Jon facing the cavalry, and its epic tracking shot of Jon in the battlefield (Jon somehow gets more blood on him through the shot, no idea how they did that) make this a sequence to behold. All the shots are beautiful and terrifying and everything we've come to expect from this show. Combine all this with a fantastic dragon moment and an incredibly satisfying ending, this episode is going to live on as both a modern classic and the moment when TV and cinematic action began to combine.
