Wish (2023)
A gift for Disney fanatics!
The other reviews are wrong. If you love Easter Eggs & amazing music, this is a great movie! I was able to catch a lot of Easter Eggs, but the trivia points out a lot. The vocal talent led by Ariana DeBose & Chris Pine is amazing, plus the music behind them. I don't want to post spoilers, but look at the clothes & mannerisms of the characters. This really is a celebration of 100 years of Disney Animation. It's funny and magical. You just have to watch it. Don't let the people who just don't get it.
Ok I really don't need so many characters to tell you to watch this movie but it also had Alan Tudyk as a talking goat.
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
The start of my love for Sherlock Holmes
I decided to watch BBC's Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and it filled me with memories of this film. Honestly, this spurred my life long love of Sherlock. Like many of the 80s Disney movies, such as The Rescuers, its been mostly forgotten. The casting is perfect, especially with Vincent Price as Ratigan. (Coincidentally the model for Dr. Strange). There are many Easter Eggs from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work, such as the dog being named Toby.
I can't even tell you how many times I watched this growing up in the 80s & 90s. It's a much watch!
South Pacific (2009)
Peng-wings
If, like me, you're watching after discovering that Benedict Cumberbatch struggles to say "penguins", you might be bit disappointed. The actually says it correctly frequently. Of course, it's still funny when he says "peng-wings" or "peng-lings". If you're unfamiliar, just google it. It's hilarious.
That being said, I didn't just watch it because of his narration. I'm a nature lover & former Sea World Educator, as well. The photography & cinematography is absolutely stunning. Its also very interesting. I do wish that the narration didn't say the types of animals all the time. For example, it specifies robber/coconut crap, but not rock hopper & other breeds of penguins.
Whether you're watching because you're a nature lover, Benedict Cumberbatch fan (CumberCollective), or both, I highly recommend this documentary.
Side note- as BC has a great choice for narration you can discover more documentaries under the "as self" category on his page. He also narrates audiobooksn as well.
Bridgerton (2020)
Its not supposed to be Jane Austen....
Ok, reading the reviews frustrated me. Many people think this is a Jane Austen take like Sandition. Bridgerton is a book series by Julia Quinn. If you want to be super technical, Jane Austen's novels were mostly before the Regency period. She lived from 1775-1817. The Regency period was 1811-1820.
That being said, romance novels, including Regency, are not grand literary works like Austen. They aren't trying to be. It is a guilty pleasure genre with various degrees of steaminess. They are fairly predictable and fun reads. Though period pieces, historical accuracy isn't the #1 priority. It's fiction. That being said, Queen Charlotte was very likely mixed race.
Speaking of race, this is a Shondaland production & Shonda Rhimes is known for the inclusiveness. There's no way she would ignore Queen Charlotte's lineage, and I think she used that as an opening to add in the inclusiveness. Not to mention, viewers like seeing themselves represented. By adding a diverse class, more people are willing to watch. Same goes for the color schemes- especially the Featheringtons!
If you've read the books, you'll still love it. My mom read them before watching it & after watching it, I've read most of Julia Quinn's bibliography. We both loved it. Yes, some liberties have been taken, such as adding characters & side stories and making Daphne a blonde "incomparable," but it doesn't take away from the stories. I think the added side stories actually make us more invested in the characters, building up the excitement for the next seasons.
All in all, don't take the series too seriously. Just sit back, swoon, giggle, and enjoy!
