Terminal Invasion (2002)
Pretty good
Anybody who's expecting unbelievable special effects, Oscar winning performances and a trendsetting storyline, you better skip this. However, if you just want to see an action-packed alien thriller featuring Bruce Campbell, you can't go wrong.
For a TV movie, I thought it was actually pretty good. Granted, at some points the storyline has some holes, but really, I didn't enjoy the movie any less because of them.
If you're a fan of alien movies or a fan of Bruce Campbell, you should check this one out.
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
Don't ever f*ck with the King!
When I found out that the movie Bubba Ho-Tep was screening at the 'Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film', I jumped at the chance to go see it. Having read all the fantastic reviews and being a Bruce Campbell fan, I expected a lot from this movie. And let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed.
The movie mixes a couple of genres. There's a lot of comedy. The scene where Elvis is fighting with a huge scarab beetle is really funny. The whole theater was rolling in the aisles. Loads of cool oneliners also. Of course there's also action, when our 2 heroes are fighting the mummy. Finally, there's drama too. When Elvis is wondering if his daughter would care that he was still alive and that he just wants the chance to talk to her. At such moments in the film, you really fell bad for the King.
I almost can't remember the last time when Bruce Campbell mastered a role THIS good. He really shines as Elvis. Ossie Davis is really good also as 'the black Jack Kennedy'.
Overall: a great movie and when you get the chance, check it out: you won't be disappointed. I just hope the film will find a distributor.
Double Whammy (2001)
One word: awesome!
With a cast that includes Denis Leary AND Steve Buscemi, it's almost impossible to go wrong and this movie proves it! This flick has plenty of hilarious must-see scenes. An example: When Leary is explaining to Buscemi on the phone that girls sometimes call each other guys (when they say, 'let's go guys!') but guys could never call each other girls (Buscemi: 'cause then it would seem they're fagots, right?). Hell, I'm laughing now just thinking about it!
The two guys who are writing a movie script in an empty room with just a dummy tied to a chair on which they try different torturing techniques, are very funny also.
See this movie and you definitely won't be disappointed!
Frailty (2001)
A great directorial debut for Bill Paxton
I went to see this movie not knowing much about it. What I did know was that Bill Paxton directed it and also had the lead role in it.
If you are expecting a real slasher, that's not what you'll get. There's actually not much gore in this film. It's really a very good thriller that gets under your skin. I guess Paxton was influenced by 'A Simple Plan' by Sam Raimi in which he also starred.
The acting is very good and believable. Paxton, Powers Boothe, the 2 kids and even McConaughey are in top form. For a guy who is directing his first movie, Paxton, I must say, does it almost perfectly. The sound and music only add to the movie.
Then there's the ending. I've read that many people all saw the twists coming. I myself expected maybe two twists, but the absolute ending caught me by surprise, which is a good thing.
My rating: 10/10
Crazy Six (1997)
Boring piece of crap
I bought this movie for about 2,5 dollars at a local flea market. I thought that with the cast present in this movie (Ice-T, Rob Lowe & Mario Van Peebles are all OK), it would be pretty good. Boy, was I wrong. This movie annoyed the hell out of me. Almost every scene drags on too long. The scene where Rob Lowe is watching this girl singing and dancing in a bar lasts forever! It was one of the worst scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. The rest is no picknick either. My guess is when they finished the movie, they only had 30 minutes of film, so they made everything last 3x longer.
Conclusion: The current 1,9 rating here on imdb is right on the money. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Go watch some paint dry for 1,5 hour instead of watching this!
If you want to see some better movies made by this director, watch 'Mean Guns'(with Christopher Lambert & Ice-T) or 'Postmortem' (with Charlie Sheen) instead.
The Don's Analyst (1997)
OK movie
First of all, I've read in other reviews that this movie is a rip-off from 'Analyze This' and 'The Sopranos'. In my view, it's the other way around. This movie was released in 1997, the other ones in 1999. The movie itself is good, but not great. When I watched it, I had a few laughs and I certainly didn't bore myself. I'd give it a 7/10.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
Fun action-packed movie
I recently watched this movie again after I saw it a couple of years ago in the theater. It was exactly as I remembered it: a fun action-packed movie. Johnny Cage (played by Linden Ashby) is the most entertaining character in the movie. He delivers a couple of one-liners which will surely make you laugh. Christopher Lambert as Rayden was also a good casting choice. If you were a fan of the video game, I'm sure you'll love this movie. My rating: 8/10.
