Not as terrible as I thought
29 March 2014
I had this DVD at home for a long time because I'm a fan of Timothy Dalton. Today I finally decided to watch it and it wasn't that terrible. The movie is an attempt to tell the story a Portuguese-Spanish saint in a time (the 70s) when these movies were already old fashioned. Spanish cinema has a lot of religious movies from the 50s. I understand the director tries to modernise a little bit this kind of genre. There's a lot of violence and cruelty (it looks like an early 'Game of Thrones'!) and for the first time the Church is well criticised. It has some boring bits and the special effects (the blood) are very false, but we're talking about a Spanish film from 1976 so instead of giving the film 6 stars, I give it 7 for its effort. Timothy Dalton, although dubbed in Spanish, does a great and convincing job. As well as other notorious Spanish actors, like Antonio Ferrandis (I never thought I would despise 'Chanquete'!).
