The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961)
Brilliantly awful!
In the world of so bad it's good, this is the lesser know sibling to plan 9 from outer space. As much as I enjoyed that one, this one may be better/worse. There is virtually no dialog. The story is told mainly through narration by director Coleman Francis, who clearly attended film school with Ed Wood. Francis even uses some of same actors Wood did in plan 9.
Here are some random comments:
The stage for awesome awfulness is set in the first scene, which is just an excuse for gratuitous nudity and seems totally unrelated to anything that follows.
One of my favorite scenes is when two rangers struggle to climb a mountain whose summit the narrator says would need a paratrooper to reach. Luckily a couple of lost boys who are apparently skilled mountainclimbers also reach the top to encounter the beast.
At some point, perhaps in thr middle of shooting, Coleman Francis watched North by Northwest and felt inspired to rent a plane.
Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson displays his acting chops by often repeating the one English word he learned for the movie: "aaah". Then at the end in a touching moment caresses a rabbit as he lays dying.
As bad as it is, there is a quaint charm to the movie. If you liked Plan 9, it's definitely worth seeing.
Dachra (2018)
Flawed but interesting
I enjoyed the different cultural aspects of this Tunisian film. I liked the cinematography as well. The foggy settings lent a surreal feel at times. Ultimately though, the characters were not particularly well developed or likeable. In fact, quite the opposite. I tried hard to like it but overall can only recommend it if you want to check out a derivative foreign film or are bored. It's not painfully bad, but it's not all that good either. Just an hour and a half of arguing and bad decisions with a little gore and a predictable plot mixed in.
Babylon 5 (1993)
Excellent series
I first saw the show in it's initial run. I mostly enjoyed it, although I began to lose interest in the middle of the third season. I recently watched it again and liked it even more.
I think the later episodes have a different feel for a number of reasons. It was not known if the show would survive cancellation. I also read that some scripts were lost at a convention and had to be revised. Despite this, and some key personnel changes, the show continued at a surprisingly high level.
I give it a high recommendation based on some great ideas and a fine overarching story. It was innovative in many ways. It had some flaws, such as stilted acting, at times painful dialogue, and some preachy aspects. But the characters were mostly good, especially those in supporting roles. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but definitely worth trying to see if you like it.
