Twilight (2008)
Disappointed
You cannot compare the book to the film, that is for sure. However, that doesn't make it any better or worse. Having read the book and found it overwhelmingly emotional and full of a power to keep me glued to the pages, I was curious to see how the film would match up to the brilliance. On a good note I thought the casting of Patterson a good choice and he was convincing, however, even his superb acting could not save the disappointment i felt once again, that such a fantastic piece of writing could be completely destroyed by film (a similar disappointment i had felt with Harry Potter too)Some scenes were choppy, the art of portraying how time went by failed because it let the emotion fade and it seemed that the film was only really focusing on the 'wow' factor. The film may have been 2 and half hours, but it seemed to buzz by so quickly that i felt i had only been sitting there for 20 minutes, and not in a good way. I will give credit to the scene in Bella's bedroom where Bella and Edward kiss and he throws her off. This scene was the first glimps of emotion that i had got from the book, but it was the only scene that seemed to reflect it..and again over so quickly. I know you cannot go through scene by scene of the book, but something was lost in the film making. I did like the unconventional though, of the vampire's and the settings, i was worried it would look more like Buffy, and surprisingly they kept the stereotype down to a very subtle idea. A terrific book, and a very lost film.
Saw (2004)
It could have been amazing
I am a big fan of films that I can get my teeth into, sit and watch and try to uncover the plot and I must say that SAW had the makings of being an amazing film. However, I found this film to give nothing more than a feeling of disappointment before the film had even finished and then once it had finished I was wishing that I had done something more worth while with the time then watching a film that could have been so much better. The film is a mess, it's jumpy the camera work isn't all it's cracked up to be and the gore..well sorry but I've seen more gore when i've cut my finger when cutting vegetables. I'd heard so much hype over this film, and people telling me how gory it was, but gory wouldn't be the word I would use, yes it was sadistic, a little bit sick in places and prehaps yes just a wee bit over the top with graphic scenes, but the only bit I would consider to be anywhere near the phrase 'GORY' would be when Lawrence is chopping off his foot.
The plot isn't much better either, however, as I've repeated, it could have been fantastic all the fittings were there they just didn't fit into the right places in my opinion. How on earth did that 'dead' guy on the floor stay playing dead for so long without breathing or making any kind of noise at all, everyone knows that if you try and hold your breath for too long, you start to choke and come back up for air. I know this is Hollywood but you can't just make out that a living person can just stop breathing and still have a pulse.
Why they have even bothered to make a third film, let alone a first doesn't makes sense to me, for this film sure as hell wasn't a hit for me, and I'll give everything a chance.
Doctor Who: The Shakespeare Code (2007)
DR WHO keeps getting better
Martha Jone's first trip in the tardis and what better place to be, then with the man of many words himself (of course I am referring to Shakespeare) How many Shakespeare puns they managed to entwine with in the episode I can not be certain, but I reckon a fair few. Fun packed full of excellent acting from all areas and Shakespeare was a spot on for the character. Another one of Russell's bests and I am very keen to see what DR WHO has yet to offer, keep up the fabulous entertainment. The witches were actually alarmingly frightful and for the first time I was actually hiding behind a pillow, although the threesome pulled off a grand job, and yet again I have few complaints. David Tennant never ceases to amaze me and Martha Jones is beginning to fit in quite nicely and I am starting to get used to the whole DR WHO without Rose tyler, although she will never be forgotten.
Doctor Who: Smith and Jones (2007)
Fast beginning
At last DR WHO is back on our tellys and to be honest with you my Saturday nights were become tedious, what with only the X FACTOR as my source of entertainment. So as you can imagine I was relieved to have something worth my time on the box. Smith and Jones seemed a tad rushed and I feel that the death scene was over way too soon, however, despite this minor fact the portrayal of the new assistant was well pronounced. Martha Jones is independent, strong minded, but beneathe her determind disposition she has her own problems in her family which brings some humanity to her character. David Tennant did his perfect performance once again and I was pleased to see that his memory of the old side kick hasn't yet ceased. The rino policeman reminded me of something out of Jamanji but still they were fun. Can't really complain as I had been waiting for doctor who to be back on telly since xmas.
The Illusionist (2006)
unsatisfying
When I went to see this film I wasn't sure what I was expecting. I mean with a such a title I could be seeing anything really, couldn't I? So I went in to the cinema with a completely vague idea and waited for the film to entertain me and draw me in. I actually thought this film was really good, I loved the tricks (although I did wonder how they managed to train butterflies to do that) anyhoo, so I did get into the film and started to enjoy it, however, then the leading woman "died" and was pushed out on a horse......and the whole plot was discovered and I was mortified!! I hate it when films take the easy way out and do the oh so "predictable" thing. The ending to this movie was, in my opinion shite!! total garabage! complete copout and personally so un-original....get a new plot for god sake. I knew exactly what was going to happen once the leading lady had died and it's just pathetic..it's called illusionist, and OMG..look it all a f**king stinking.............(beep) you finish the rest
Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride (2006)
Worth waiting for
The run away bride as a Christmas special was fantastic, with all the sadness of eastenders Doctor who brought back that little piece of fun. Catherine Tate was superb and David Tennant was brilliant as always (and as tasty as always too) After doomsday I wasn't sure if I could laugh again knowing that Rose had gone and the doctor was grieving, however, I was chuckling all the way through and it was nice to see that even through all that chaos the doctor still had time to remember his now lost friend. The episode was full of wit and their transport devises had me in stitches and the spider monster was great I really have nothing bad to say about this episode.
I did notice and maybe others did too, but did anyone else notice how in that episode so many of the settings were similar to ones we've seen before. For example, when they are climbing that ladder (new earth) the whole underground layer (new earth) when Donna is walking around the outside of the tardis( first episode ever). There almost seem to be and under layer of episodes put together in a memory of Rose, but it was very subtle to see.
I recommend that people see this, if they haven't already.
Doctor Who: The Girl in the Fireplace (2006)
Second Best by far
It is strange that I have come to love the nature of the 'Doctor Who' series seeing as I found it incredibly dull in the first series. I wasn't interested much in the next series because I believed it had already disappointed me. I'm saying this after watching the whole second series for the hundredth time and i believe that David Tennant has a part to play. 'The Girl In the FirePlace' has got to be one of the best written doctor who's I have seen so far (apart from the last episode which was just brilliant) Although this episode still hangs onto those cheesy lines, this episode also produced something I have yet too see in most t.v programmes of today. The acting by David Tennant and Sophia Myles is passionate and the chemistry is so overwhelming (although I did feel for Rose, seeing as the doctor is the man she loves) The monsters were the best by far in the whole series, scary and somewhat funny in the light of the entertainment. Athur the horse was a dip back into the comical side and had me laughing none stop and the ending to this episode was phenomenal.
I certainly believe that this is well worth the watch, brilliant script and fantastic setting, I only hope that the new series in the new year can do just as well as this and so many before and after this particular episode.
8/10
Kidulthood (2006)
Disgusted
I have just seen this film as a media project and I am not sure how I am going to right a review that gives the film any credit. This film is apparently a fifteen, however, the part when the young girl gives an older man head, in my opinion sends it soaring into an eighteen. The script was badly written (No offence to Noel Clarke, cause he was great in Doctor Who)the acting was dreadful and I would not recommend this film to anyone. I don't know much about London life and I do respect that these things do go on, but even so it still seemed too dramatised despite being truthful to the book. The only thing that I would give credit to would be the camera work, the camera work was beautifully done, it's ashame that the rest of it didn't come up to scratch.
Doctor Who: Fear Her (2006)
Brilliant!
This was a clever piece of writing and was full of imagination (something I always like.) Billie Piper and David Tennant did another fantastic way of making everything so believable and real. The thing I liked most about this episode was the way they finished it. Usually the only way to stop a monster is by shooting it, or finding a code that'll make them have their emotions back, where as this one was just taking away the nightmare with a song.
This episode also proved what a strong character Rose really is, and how far she has come from being just an ordinary young girl to being the doctor's side kick.
That's all I am gonna say on this, but I just want to ask, has anyone else noticed that the inside of the tardis looks a bit like the outside of a dalek?.....
Doctor Who: Doomsday (2006)
What an ending
This was definitely one of the best episodes of Doctor Who that I have seen. It was packed full of emotion and events that kept you on the edge of your seat, and If I may say so David Tennant and Billie Piper were superb. The war against the Cybermen and the Daleks is going to be one of those classic moments in TV history, despite it being rather noise, it was tense and was conducted well.
This episode was also a real tear jerker the scene where the doctor and Rose are on either side of the wall was heart crushing, the scene on the beach where Rose tells the doctor she loves him is touching, but when you see the tears running down David tennant's cheeks that was devasting and if you didn't cry then you have a heart of stone.
I did feel that the funny moment at the end was prehaps slightly to soon, but what a surprise to see Catherine tate in the doctor's TARDIS. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the Christmas episode brings.
Last of all, Rose's exit was a sad one, but a good one, although she's 'technically' dead, she is still alive which means maybe, just maybe the door is still open for her return...maybe.
Doctor Who: New Earth (2006)
Doctor, Rose and Cats
This episode has been one of my favourites of the whole entire series. I was not fond of Eccleston as Doctor Who, but David Tennant has brought a whole new meaning to the name. The chemistry between Rose and the Doctor is fantastic. My favourite quote has to be when Cassandra was in the doctor's body " Oh baby,i'm beating out a samba" This episode is full with secrets, new, new things, and of course nuns with cat faces which was a tad freaky, but worked so well. It also proved that Billie and David can really act. The voice changes when Cassandra went from Rose's body to the Doctor's body was right on the mark and I could believe what was going on.
In this episode nothing is of the ordinary, Cat nurses are finding cures for everything, the face of Boe appears with a great secret, and Rose kisses the Doctor (although it is actually Cassandra) We also find out that Rose is attracted to the new doctor.
