Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
A guy tries to get laid, but guess what though
No such thing happens. It is ever puzzling why this film was made. The only answer is that it was supposed to be some weird doppleganger of Metal Jacket. The war has come home and stuff happens. OR, Maybe, I'm sorry, maybe You waren't aware that sex, and art, and sex as art and art as sex are major powers driving people in their everyday choices or, at least, in their imagined lifes? Enjoy this film with a glass of good ole whisky, that way it wouldn't be a waste of an evening.
The Sweet Hereafter (1997)
Parents
In a perfect world You would be given this film as a gift by a person You trust. You wouldn't know anything about it and just invest two hours of Your life to ingest it, come what may. You would be transformed. This film has power - it's the magic of cinema, created by intelligent people who understand visual language.
People are born from other people which, what every adult understands, makes them damaged from the very beginning. Every now and then a special kind of insight arrises in a human being that allows them to break the cycle of perpetual suffering. This is the main ideological thrust of the film, backed by a powerful story. And there's the image and handling of actors which makes it feel archetypical and at the same time adventure-like. Picture discovering a new color. Echoes of the visuals that enhance deeper understanding. Of what? Everything - let this wash over You to enrich Your experience of living in this world.
Cameraperson (2016)
We won't grow old together
I had such high hopes for this to work. The very title makes a huge promise, and it partly fulfills it, however You might find the Person not as charming as She thinks She is.
There's a dissonance between first two sequences of the film and the whole rest. Whatch these two. These are amazing - there the Camera really is the Person. The whole rest is pedestrian, with too much 'in your face' ideology and self indulgence.
