Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
just meh
The acting was subpar, the cinematography was lackluster, and the best parts of the book weren't included. The whole thing just felt rushed. The characters and their relationships didn't have time to develop. The dialogue was choppy and awkward. We lost out on a lot of the feelings and thoughts Kya had in the book. Overall, it stuck pretty close to the book in terms of plot, but I honestly which the director would have taken more creative liberty to do it better. There were moments that were ALMOST moving but they were cut short. Just meh.
Love Island (2015)
It's reality TV - what do you expect?
To all the people rating this show 1/10 stars, WHAT do you think you're watching? It's reality TV, for Lord's sake! Not every show needs to be a thought-provoking drama! I love Love Island for what it is. Comparing it to other reality TV dating shows, this is by FAR one of the best. As a former fan of the Bachelor franchise, this show is MUCH better. It's so much less predictable and there is less catty drama. You can see how the cast genuinely make romantic and platonic connections. The format of the show keeps things interesting in ways that other reality TV shows do not. This is a perfect show to watch after a long day of surviving modern life. It's lighthearted and fun and good for what it is - reality TV.
Dead to Me (2019)
I love a fun murder
Perfect show for murderinos who don't want to feel too crusty or bogged down by a heavy murder plot. This show has some genuinely very funny moments to offset the heavy subject matter. Great acting by Christina and Linda, they have great onscreen chemistry.
How to Fix a Drug Scandal (2020)
Very good.
I watched this all in one sitting and enjoyed it thoroughly. This is NOT a politically charged documentary. It is fair and balanced and paints a balanced picture of the many parties involved. The movie is not strongly advocating for criminal justice reform, it is simply advocating for justice and truth. It also touches on addiction and you can see how it affects different populations in different ways. The chemists are sentenced less than some of the thousands of people they helped put behind bars. They documentary fails to explore how drug use impacts because across socioeconomic lines. They could have delved even deeper into the context of the war on drugs and the effects it has had overwhelming the criminal justice system. I personally think it could have been longer to provide more of this context. I could have watched even more on the two fraudulent chemists as well.
Very interesting if you enjoy learning about the criminal justice system, fraud, or drugs.
