West Virginia Stories (2016)
Captivating 'slice of life' drama!
I installed Flex on my Android TV box and clicked around the menus and free offerings, etc and just happened to click on this at random. It's a gem so I'm glad I did. Three different episodes set in one cold, unforgiving location.
The first scene is about two men who are out hunting. They stumble on an event and argue over how to deal with it.
Second story is about a son who takes his fiance home to meet his dying father.
The third tale involves an inquisitive child annoying her grandfather with too many questions!
It's a cracking and realistic script propped up by excellent performances. The elegant and haunting soundtrack doesn't hurt, either. Unsentimental and realistic drama.
Stargirl (2020)
A wasted chance to create good TV.
After three episodes, this is just another Tim Burton wet dream.
Tired cliches in dark atmospheric rooms aren't interesting.
You'd think a story about a girl with a superpower would write itself, right?
Not this time... the humour is flat, the pouty girl is just too annoying for words and the Nebraska town is just too cute to enjoy.
Yawn!
What a Crazy World (1963)
It's Grease for the English!
Terrific throwback and nostalgic look at the early 1960s and London.
Lots of familiar faces including Harry H Corbett doing a brilliant turn as the perpetually angry blue collar dad.
The affable Joe Brown leads a group of ne'er do wells through the markets, cafes, pubs and clubs of London.
The songs aren't great, but neither do they feel too forced or crowbarred in to the story.
The similarities (parallels) between this film and Grease are uncanny.
The manic Freddie and the Dreamers add some comic relief.
Pretty good movie, even in 2020!
